Intellectual Property Specialist

Position Summary

McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP, a Chicago-based, full-service intellectual property law firm, is seeking an Intellectual Property (IP) Specialist. This role works closely with our team of legal practitioners (attorneys, technical advisors, patent agents) and support staff to help us provide industry-leading service to our clients. 

We are seeking a college graduate who is tech-savvy, detail-oriented, and eager to learn and develop expertise in IP-related systems, tools, and workflows. Prior legal or IP experience is not required. 

For this role, you will be working full-time primarily out of our downtown Chicago office, with the possibility of some remote working days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and develop expertise in various IP-related systems, tools, and workflows to perform case management functions, including those listed below.
  • Administer client and case/matter intake.
  • Prepare and file documents with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Review USPTO rules and procedures, evaluate practitioner work-product, and prepare related reports practitioner use.
  • Prepare draft correspondence to, and/or communicate directly with, clients, foreign agent law firms, and other parties.
  • Prepare USPTO office action response kits for use by practitioners.
  • Review and address IP specialist and practitioner docket reports.
  • Perform various other tasks in connection with ongoing case management (e.g., ensuring integrity of case data, proactively identifying and resolving issues, etc.)

Job Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree 
  • Experience: Technically savvy with a demonstrated ability to learn and develop expertise in various software-based systems and tools. 
  • Experience with (i) docketing, document management, or case management systems, such as NetDocuments or ANAQUA, (ii) computer programming/scripting, or (iii) workflow/process optimization is a plus, but not required.

Skills: 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and Word.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint is a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently based on competing deadlines, and to manage a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a clear, organized, and to-the-point manner, and with a positive “client service” tone and attitude.
  • Works well independently, takes ownership of projects, and takes initiative to proactively identify and solve problems with a focus on moving projects to completion.
  • Eager to learn, motivated, and excited to be working as a team with practitioners and support staff to advance the firm’s primary goal of providing industry leading service to our clients.
  • Flexibility with work hours and/or overtime as needed.
