Post-Graduate Associate in Human Immunology/Genomics (Lee Lab)

Full-time paid post-graduate associate training position in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. The position is for 1 to 2 years, but ideally 2 years.

The Lee Laboratory develops and applies new genomic technologies to interrogate the complexity of the human immune system. Using next-generation and single-cell sequencing, we characterize variation in adaptive immune receptors (e.g. T cell receptors) of patients with cancer or autoimmunity. We then use a combination of high-throughput functional genomics, immunology, and molecular biology to characterize immune gene and variant function in depth (e.g. PMID: 33483338, PMID: 40799546, PMID: 41415427). Our goal is to use this knowledge to understand disease pathogenesis and to develop potential treatments. This position is focused on the study of cancer, but can be tailored to candidate’s research interests.

Education: Post-graduate positions are open to those who have recently received a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in the biological sciences or a related field. Prior lab-based experience in immunology or molecular biology is desirable. This is an ideal position for recent graduates interested in an intensive mentored research experience prior to graduate or medical school, though candidates with other backgrounds will also be considered.

Mentorship: Mentorship is a priority in the lab, and trainees will have frequent formal and informal meetings with Dr. Lee. The candidate will meet with Dr. Lee to discuss research goals, experimental techniques, data, and its interpretation. The candidate will be encouraged to present at lab meetings, and attend Yale’s human immunology seminars and retreats. Mentoring will include discussion of recent papers from the primary literature as well as discussions about career options in the life sciences and MD/PhD programs.

Training: The candidate will receive training in molecular biology (e.g. DNA cloning, lentiviral work, and CRISPR/Cas9), cell culture, immunology (e.g. isolation of immune cells, expression of T cell receptors and antigens, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence), and genomics techniques (e.g. gene library screening and sequencing). Additional training in computational/bioinformatics is encouraged for those with a computer science background. Efforts are made to tailor the experience to the post-graduate’s goals and interests.

Candidates should be highly organized, self-motivated, hard-working and reliable, with good interpersonal and communication skills. Must have good attention to detail and problem-solving skills, and be able to perform both independently as well as in a team setting. There is an emphasis on active participation in publications, and candidates who have an interest in being trained to lead or co-lead research projects are sought after.

Application Process: Interested applicants should contact Dr. Mark Lee, MD, PhD (mark.n.lee@yale.edu) with the Subject line: “Post-graduate position in the Lee lab” and include a copy of their CV. Please also include a very brief description of career goals and proposed start/end date. Yale University is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity in its faculty, students, and staff.
