About the Internship
The Leadership for Change (LfC) Internship is an 8‑week, paid opportunity for undergraduate students to explore how museums and cultural organizations impact communities. Interns are placed at Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., or at Smithsonian Affiliate organizations nationwide, and participate in shared virtual programming and professional development.
Placement Options
- Washington, D.C. – Work with Smithsonian museums/offices; housing provided at GWU.
- Smithsonian Affiliate (Nationwide) – Local or hybrid placements at Affiliate museums.
- 50/50 DC–Local Community Model – 4 weeks in D.C., 4 weeks implementing a project locally.

Eligibility
- Open to undergraduate students (rising sophomores–seniors).
- All majors welcome—no museum experience required.
- International students enrolled at U.S. institutions may apply.
- Students graduating in May/August 2026 are not eligible.
Compensation & Support
- $6,000 stipend plus travel support (varies by location).
- Housing provided for D.C. placements; lodging support for hybrid placements.
- Background check and required trainings must be completed.
