Wildlife Public Relations Intern
Background: Dane County Humane Society’s Wildlife Center treats approximately 3,000 sick, injured and orphaned wild animals each year, including raptors, waterfowl, songbirds, reptiles, and mammals. Outreach is integral to our mission and is achieved through social media platforms, major events, booths, and contact with the public during reception triage and admissions. DCHS offers wildlife public relation internships during the year (Jan-Dec) for periods of either 9 or 12 months. Interns will be responsible for various aspects of social media content, educational materials, and public interaction under the direction of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Coordinator. Compensation is provided in the form of a stipend.
Duties include:
- Write and edit social media and newsletter content
- Assist with community presentations and booths
- Attend DCHS major events
- Admission and reception tasks
- Update public signage/handouts
- Outreach to local organizations
- Online training course completions
- Social media volunteer coordination
- Assist in managing photo and video content
Qualifications:
- Strong interest in wildlife and other environmental topics
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively through written and spoken word
- Ability to remain calm while working under pressure
- Ability to represent DCHS’s Wildlife Center professionally
- Course work or experience in language arts, public speaking, education, biology, wildlife management, environmental science or related fields preferred
Hours: Wildlife Public Relation Interns are required to work 1-3 days/week, days and times are flexible. Shifts can range from 2 to 10-hours long depending on preference, reception needs, and event attendance. The Wildlife Center’s open hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. Training, including associated writing guidelines & topics, will be provided.
Dates: Public Relation internships are available from January – December. Start dates are based on the applicants and their availability.
