Reporter/Newsletter Producer
The News Reporter — an independent, family-owned newspaper that has served Columbus County, N.C., since 1896 — is seeking a reporter/newsletter producer to help launch a local news product focused on northern Brunswick County, including Leland, Belville and surrounding communities.
This position will focus primarily on northern Brunswick County, with occasional reporting assignments in Columbus County.
About the role
The reporter/newsletter producer will be responsible for developing and reporting stories that matter to fast-growing communities in northern Brunswick County. Coverage will largely focus on:
- local government
- growth and development
- transportation
- business and economic issues
This position may be part-time or full-time, depending on the qualifications and interests of the applicant.
Responsibilities
- cultivate sources and generate original, relevant story ideas
- report and write accurate, fair and engaging news stories
- attend public meetings and community events as needed
- cover breaking news, including occasional nights and weekends
- collaborate with an editor to refine stories and prepare them for publication
- contribute to the development and production of local newsletters
Qualifications
- strong reporting, writing and interviewing skills
- ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- flexibility to work evenings and weekends as news coverage requires
- familiarity with or interest in covering local government and growth-related issues
- residence in or near northern Brunswick County is strongly preferred
Compensation
- $18–$24 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
