The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD) is excited to offer a paid internship for college students seeking to launch a career in Human Resources through real-world, hands-on experience. This opportunity provides practical exposure to key HR functions while supporting an agency dedicated to environmental protection and public health.
The Human Resources Department is organized into several functional areas, including Employee Relations, Employee Development, Workforce Development, Payroll, Benefits, and Employment Services, which encompasses Talent Acquisition and Selection, Retention, and Classification and Compensation. Together, the HR team supports approximately 1,700 employees across more than 200 classifications in a wide range of fields and industries, each requiring unique knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LACSD is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student to join the team as a Human Resources Intern, primarily supporting the Employment Services (Recruitment and Selection) section. In this role, the intern will assist with administrative and HR-related tasks while gaining exposure to recruitment and selection processes within a large public agency. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong learning agility and critical thinking skills, the ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data, and strong written and verbal communication skills to convey information clearly and professionally. Proficiency with technology to enhance efficiency and streamline HR processes, along with strong attention to detail and organizational skills, is essential. An exceptional HR Intern will be proactive, eager to learn, and able to balance administrative responsibilities with core HR functions.
Responsibilities may include:
- Providing recruitment and selection support, including exam folder closeouts, application redaction, reference checks, and preparation of interview and testing materials
- Reviewing applications, scheduling written examinations and oral interviews, scoring examinations, and entering data into the applicant tracking system (ATS)
- Assisting with data collection, analysis, and reporting using current and historical employee and recruitment data
- Maintaining and enhancing recruitment tools and resources, including the MOU Hiring Processes Matrix and the Interview Questions Database
- Proctoring written examinations and assisting with the coordination of selection activities
- Supporting job analysis, classification studies, competency modeling, salary studies, and updates to desk manuals and process documentation
- Preparing onboarding materials and assisting with new hire orientation logistics
- Conducting research to support recruitment, classification, and compensation initiatives
- Participating in department staff meetings and providing general administrative support
- With oversight, supporting or leading straightforward recruitments from start to finish, including reviewing test and interview materials and proposing recommendations based on findings
Additional learning opportunities may be available in other sections of HR such as Benefit Administration, Workers Compensation, Leave Administration, and Workforce Development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligibility:
- Maintain student status through summer or fall enrollment at an accredited college or university in a program with an emphasis in Human Resources, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Public Administration, or other relevant field.
- Have a strong working knowledge of computers.
- Be available to work part-time for up to a year.
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Possess a valid California Class C driver license (or an equivalent driver's license issued by a state or territory within the United States).
Desirable Qualifications:
- Pursuing a master's degree in Human Resources or Industrial and Organizational Psychology
- Interest in public service career

The selection process will begin with a review of applications to ensure candidates meet the minimum qualifications. The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process.
Interviews are expected to begin in January/February 2026 and will continue periodically until all positions are filled. Notifications of placement are anticipated in March/April.
All recommended candidates must successfully complete a background process, which includes submitting official transcripts, completing a conviction questionnaire, review of DMV records, and a pre-employment drug screening.
