Communications Marketing Intern
Position Description: The Communications & Marketing Intern will play a vital role in supporting the marketing of services and events for the Dean of Students Office. This internship aims to provide hands-on experience coordinating and executing various initiatives to promote departmental events and effectively engage with our ODU campus community audience.
Duties & Responsibilities: (what the intern will be assigned to do)
- Contribute to targeted marketing efforts via social media (via utilizing text, images, and videos) and creating promotional materials for digital and print formats to promote upcoming events and initiatives (C, EI)
- Engage with students, faculty, and staff, while gaining insights into effective digital and print marketing strategies (CSD, C, CT, P)
- Monitor engagement metrics (likes, shares, comments) and adapt content based on performance data to enhance skills in content creation and platform management (CT, EI, P, T)
- Support website content management, including updating menu items with descriptions and photographs, ensuring website information remains current and engaging (T)
- Assist in venue research for future campus-based events to enhance community engagement (C, CT, P, TW)
- Participate in event execution at various campus locations, assisting with setup, student, and ODU community interaction, and ensuring exceptional participant experiences (CT, TW)
- Brainstorm creative event ideas for enhanced engagement from students, faculty, staff, and families (C, TW)
- Provide reception support, including greeting visitors, answering calls, and handling messages, gaining exposure to professional communication practices (CSD, C)
- Support data entry tasks, assisting in maintaining accurate records and databases (T)
- Assist in event logistics, helping to coordinate and execute various tasks under supervision (C, L)
- Document administrative processes and tasks performed to demonstrate proficiency in event coordination and support (CSD, T)
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions, gaining insights into event planning and marketing strategies (C, P, TW)
- Maintain meeting notes and follow up on action items promptly to demonstrate engagement and accountability (C, P, TW)

- By the end of the internship, successfully contribute to the planning and execution of a minimum of four specific marketing campaigns and two events
- Generate and publish a minimum of 40 social media posts across designated platforms throughout the internship period
- Efficiently assist in organizing and managing logistical aspects of a minimum of four marketing projects and two events
- Actively participate in weekly team brainstorming sessions, contributing a minimum of at least six well-developed ideas for upcoming marketing initiatives
Qualifications: (knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the internship)
- Eligible FWS student, currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (minimum 12 credits/semester)
- Good academic standing - 2.0 GPA or above
- Basic computer literacy
- Ability to operate a computer and phone
- Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram)
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Eagerness to learn and contribute creatively
- Problem-solving skills and/or willingness to learn
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Demonstrated positive attitude, self-motivation, and the ability to be flexible in a fast-paced environment
Length of Internship, Hours, and Wages:
- Fall Semester 2025
- Compensation: $14 per hour
- Average of 10-20 hours per week, including some evenings and weekend programs
- Student employees cannot work more than 20 hours/week, exceptions are made when classes are not in session and students are then permitted to work up to 28 hours/week
Evaluation:
- Mid-point and end-of-internship evaluations will be conducted
- Showcase opportunity – the intern will complete an end-of-experience presentation
