At the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), we stand by our mission to conserve and protect the quality of North Dakota’s air, land, and water resources following science and the law. We are looking for a candidate who identifies with this mission and has a passion for serving the citizens in our great state as a Chemistry Intern.

SUMMARY OF WORK:

As a Chemistry Intern in the Chemistry Division, you will support laboratory testing that provides critical environmental, public health, agricultural, and regulatory data for the state.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist with preparing water, soil/sediment, vegetation, animal feed, and fertilizer samples using techniques such as liquid/liquid, liquid/solid, solid phase, and automated extractions.
  • Help assemble sampling kits for department field projects.
  • Be introduced to modern analytical instrumentation such as atomic spectroscopy, colorimetry, and gas, liquid, and ion chromatography.
  • Support laboratory safety and operations by helping maintain a clean and organized work environment.

To succeed in this position, you should be detail-oriented, able to follow laboratory procedures accurately, and interested in environmental chemistry or laboratory science. Coursework or experience in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field is preferred. Strong organization, teamwork, and a commitment to safety are essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.

To be considered for this role, you must be enrolled in a college or university or be a recent graduate with coursework in chemistry, biology, geology, ecology, or other related physical or natural science.
