NextGen Agriculture/Forest Health Internship
What: Forestry Internship in collaboration with CNMI Forestry Department
Forest HealthThe Forest Health Protection and Invasive Plant Management addresses issues on forest pests and plant diseases. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is currently pursuing the suppression of invasive and detrimental species. A total of 80 acres collectively was reported as acres of concern. Pest suppression methodology includes chemical treatment, physical removing of target species, monitoring of any new species of concern and the release of biological controls.

Who: Full-time NMC Students
How you will benefit: The intern will acquire skills in data collection, use of GPS navigation tools to identify pests and invasive species, first hand experience conducting research and erradication techinques that lead to the overall health of the CNMI’s environmental and agricultural health. Interns will also benefit from networking and exposure to local agencies, companies, and professionals in their potenial career field.
Time Committment: Up to 300 hours,
Minimum Requirements:
Must be a full-time student SP25
GPA of 2.5 or higher
CNMI Forestry Preferred Areas of Study
Courses in CO210 or higher, EN201 or higher, Natural Resource Management courses
Duties:
1. Collect, Record, and enter data on invasive plants and species.
2.Assist in public outreach programs.
3.Assist in the application of pesticides and chemicals to exterminate invasive plants and species.
4.Perform outdoors research activities protecting and maintaining forest health.
5. Utilize compasses, maps, and GPS hand-held units to navigate in remote areas,
6. Ability to take detailed field notes and collect data.
7. Assist in deployment of traps at point of entries such as dock and airports.
8.Exercises safety and amicable work habits in the workplace.
9.Assist in planting for reforestation purpose.
