Instructor, Biology

Full-time, tenure-track, 9-month instructor to teach biology courses. Assignments include courses for general education biology, prerequisites for pre-health professions, and/or biology majors. Courses are offered on the LLCC main campus in Springfield, IL, and outreach centers in Jacksonville, IL, Litchfield, IL, and Taylorville, IL.

The position includes both classroom and laboratory teaching. Duties will include teaching 15 contact hours per semester of assigned classes and labs; preparing lessons and course syllabi; creating a learning environment that fosters student success and active learning; developing, integrating, evaluating and reviewing student learning outcomes in support of the College’s ongoing accreditation; participating in departmental/institutional operations and program review; evaluating and assisting students; keeping accurate records of student performance, including following grading and registration and records procedures; providing students with timely feedback; maintaining office hours; participate in professional development to maintain current in the discipline and grow as a faculty member; utilizing instructional technology in support of the teaching/learning process; and contributing to a collegial and collaborative work environment.

The Department of Natural and Agricultural Sciences consists of 21 full-time faculty and 4 full-time support positions, led by the Dean of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. The department demonstrates a strong commitment to community outreach and supports students through co-curricular activities such as clubs and organizations.

Faculty salaries are determined by education level and experience and will be between $51,901 – $93,337. Below are the salary ranges for each level of education. Additional compensation beyond base salary can be earned through extra teaching assignments during the academic year and in the summer, as well as coordinator assignments. 

Masters: $51,901 – $76,788

Masters +15 additional graduate credit hours: $54,499 – $80,627

Masters +30 additional graduate credit hours: $57,224 – $84,660

Masters +45 additional graduate credit hours: $60,084 – $88,893

Doctorate: $63,085 – $93,337

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in biology discipline
  • Prior teaching experience at the college level
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in a biology discipline
  • Experience teaching general education, majors, and/or pre-health biology courses
  • Experience teaching at a community college
  • Training (formal or informal) in science pedagogy for higher education
  • Evidence of participation in shared governance, committee work, college service
  • Experience using a learning management system (LMS) to support teaching and learning
  • Experience teaching students across a wide range of ages and diverse cultural and social backgrounds, including concurrent enrollment high school students.

This position will be open until filled; however, applications must be received on or before Sunday, February 1, 2026, to be considered during the initial review window. Remote interviews will begin February 18th and face to face interviews will begin March 17th. Anticipated start date of Fall 2026.
