Parks and Recreation Intern

JOB SUMMARY

Under the administrative direction of the Recreation Manager and Recreation Coordinators performs a wide variety of functions in the area of recreation programming.  The position requires a high level of skill in customer service, daily work with the recreation program, special events, and aquatic operations.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and supervision of recreation and/or aquatic activities and events.
  • Assist with registrations, pool pass sales, and customer service.
  • Oversees lessons, program plans, and special event organization.
  • Assist with daily records, attendance sheets, incident reports, and accident reports.
  • Creates marketing material and assists with purchasing program material.
  • Handles concessions stand ordering and inventory. 
  • Attend training sessions and help prepare agendas for in-services.
  • Provides weekly feedback for process improvement for the department.
  • Contributes to department social media content and campaigns. 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education
One or more years of college.
 
Preferred Experience
One or more years of parks, recreation, and aquatic experience.  
First Aid and CPR certifications.  
 
Required Experience
Experience in customer service.  
 
Required Special Qualifications                                   
Shall possess or be able to obtain a State of Iowa driver’s license and have a good driving record for the past three years.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Ability to use logic and/or science to solve problems with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to listen and provide requested information in person, on the phone, and by email and text.
  • General knowledge of customer service methods.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft products and point-of-sale software.
  • General knowledge of the parks, recreation, and aquatic operations. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the public; ability to tactfully handle an array of social situations; good oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions associated with recreation programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply computing applications.
  • General knowledge of office organization, facility rentals, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Required Physical Activities
Reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, sitting, walking, stooping, kneeling, speaking, climbing, crouching, standing, and repetitive motion.
 
Physical Characteristics of the Job
Medium work requires the exertion of up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force frequently.
 
Environmental Conditions
The work is performed both inside and outside and includes exposure to heat and cold. The work may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations, significant work pace pressures, and irregular work hours.  The job may work with and around cleaning and aquatic chemicals.
