Missouri State Public Defender (MSPD) is dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation to individuals who cannot afford an attorney in criminal cases. Our mission is to uphold the constitutional right to counsel and ensure fair and just legal proceedings for all Missourians.
This opportunity is designed for current law students interested in gaining firsthand experience in criminal defense. As a law student intern, you will develop practical skills, observe courtroom proceedings, and assist attorneys working in trial, appellate, juvenile, and capital offices across the state.
Positions are available statewide, with 33 trial offices located throughout Missouri. Children's Defense Team, Appellate and Capital opportunities are available in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Columbia.

Paid opportunities are only available in rural locations that do not include Kansas City, Columbia or St. Louis. Opportunities in those locations would be volunteer or for externship credit.
Responsibilities - What you’ll do
Assist with client and witness interviews.
Observe preliminary hearings, trials, motions, and other aspects of litigation.
Conduct legal research and draft motions or memoranda.
Serve subpoenas and perform related support tasks.
Provide general assistance to attorneys as needed.
Qualifications - All you need for success
Minimum Qualifications:
Currently enrolled as a 1L or 2L law student in an accredited law school.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated interest in criminal law or public defense.
Strong legal research and writing skills.
Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency with legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and Microsoft Office Suite.
