General Description: The Pasco County Planning and Development Department is seeking a Community Planning Intern to assist with Long-Range Planners with primarily data collection, research and outreach to the community. This internship will offer a professional opportunity for an independent and creative individual to engage with staff, consultants and the community through outreach events and virtually.

The position will directly support the County's mission to serve our community for a better future. The goal of the Planning and Development Department is to increase quality of life in the public realm for established new neighborhoods, and to promote functional, accessible, and attractive places. The intern will engage with the public as the department is beginning the update the 2050 Comprehensive Plan update and other Planning documents. Essential Job Functions: The Long-Range Planning Division's Team is seeking an intern with an interest in community and long-range planning. The intern should have strong interpersonal communication skills and want to learn more about  land use planning, engaging with communities, visioning and the implementation of the comprehensive plan. The Community Planning intern tasks will include:

  • Prepares fact sheets, infographs, and social media material to support planning projects.
  • Prepares outreach materials for public meetings. Attend and assist with presentations and workshops.
  • Effectively interact with numerous Pasco staff, community members, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner.
  • Project management support.
  • Ideal candidate will have proficient writing skills, good attention to detail, effective communication and ability to multi-task and flexibility to quickly move from one project to another.
  • Performs other work as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • An understanding of, and passion/strong interest in zoning and planning concepts, and data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent research, strong writing and verbal communications skills on complex topics clearly and concisely with excellent attention to detail. 
  • Ability to read for comprehension.
  • Understand how to market using social media platforms.
  • Successful candidates will possess the requisite discipline, organization, and self-motivation to work independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with WebEx meetings and/or WebEx Teams, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook), Adobe Pro preferred.
  • Ability to work 20 hours per week.

Minimum Requirements:

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Ability to operate a computer and to use a keyboard to enter data. Ability to sit, stoop, squat, walk, and stand frequently. Ability to lift 25 pounds.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Candidate may be enrolled in or graduated from an accredited college or university and be working on a Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in urban planning, public administration, or a related field.

Students must have at least three (3) years of work at an accredited college or university. However, two (2) years' of direct research experience in urban planning may be substituted for one (1) year of education.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:  Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
