Spring 2026 Paid Intern

New Heights Communications Seeks Spring 2026 Paid Interns

(Washington, DC-based/can work remotely)

About New Heights Communications

Who is New Heights? On paper, we are a woman-owned, progressive, mission-driven strategy and communications firm based in Washington, D.C., with staff in Denver, Philadelphia, New York City, and Miami. In practice, we are a team that has intentionally built a workplace where our expertise is stronger because our people bring their multifaceted identities to work. Half of us are women of color, many of us are moms (some human-moms, some dog/cat/gecko-moms), and 100% of us are book nerds.

Founded in 2010, we work for social justice in the biggest battles in Washington—and across the country. These days, that means battling authoritarianism, fighting the climate crisis, demanding equity in our national policies, securing our elections, defending reproductive justice and supporting immigrants, public transit, labor unions and working people. And much more. We’re passionate, creative and fun. And we’re looking for someone—or even a couple of people—to round out our team.

About The (Paid) Internship

New Heights takes our internship program seriously. Not only do interns join as full members of the team—getting assigned clients and joining all team meetings, taking ownership of high-impact work for both the firm and client teams, and contributing meaningfully to our company culture—but they leave with a concrete set of skills, a full portfolio of writing and press clips, and better prepared for careers in communications, advocacy, politics, public affairs, or even (especially) a job at New Heights.  Meet our current interns here. (Fun fact: At one point, half of our full-time staff were former interns.) Interns can expect to:

  • Draft statements, pitches, op-eds, and more;
  • Create press lists, pitch media and develop media coverage reports for our clients;
  • Craft social media and digital assets for clients;
  • Develop creative ideas to get our clients and ourselves in the news;
  • Be part of a close-knit, energetic team where everyone has a hand in everything;
  • Ideally, leave with a published piece or news placement by the end of the program.

We expect a lot, but we give a lot, too. We provide lots of feedback (and encourage you to do the same), actively look for ways to support your professional growth, and set aside time for one-on-one check-ins with each team member so we can get to know you—and you can get to know us and our work.

Interns are paid $18/hour, or we’re happy to work with your academic institution to provide course credit—whichever you’d prefer.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Current students or recent graduates who have or are working toward a degree in communications, political science or related field;
  • Passionate about social justice causes—and good at explaining why;
  • Excellent writers who can quickly grasp new content and easily adapt their tone, voice, formatting, and end-goals in writing;
  • Highly motivated, mature, responsible, and able to handle multiple projects in a short time frame;
  • Able to devote at least 10-15 hours per week during the spring 2026 semester, with a preferred start date in mid-/late January.
  • Comfortable working on a fully remote team. However, DC-based candidates are preferred. The majority of our team is based in D.C. and occasionally meets in-person—interns are encouraged to join when possible!

And if this somehow doesn’t describe you, but you badly want to work with us anyway, give it a go and tell us why you’re the perfect candidate.

How To Apply

Please submit the following to info@newheightscommunications.com with the subject line “Spring 2026 Internship Application: [Your Name]”

  • Your resume
  • A cover letter telling us why you would be a good fit and what you’re hoping to gain from your time with us
  • And two non-academic writing samples that showcase your voice (ideally a blog post or article)

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but priority will be given to those received by December 19.

New Heights takes diversity, equity and inclusion seriously—our team, our clients and the world are better when served by a diverse team. BIPOC candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
