Legal Intern
Calling all law students!
Now is an exciting time to be an intern in the Legal Department of the Kansas Department of Commerce! This position offers interns the opportunity to learn about the state's role in economic development, including Community Development, Business Development, International Trade, and Workforce Services. As well as understand how state and federal programs are administered at the state and local level, while gaining hands-on knowledge of various legal issues and strategies.

Compensation: $16.00/hr.
Position Summary & Responsibilities:
In this paid internship opportunity, you will work alongside the legal team in many aspects, including but not limited to interpretation and application of law, court decisions and other legal authority in the preparation of research memorandums and briefs for the numerous divisions within the state agency, reviewing proposed legislation, preparing and maintaining various legal records and reports, working on special projects, and attending hearings as needed. Interns will also have the opportunity to work on state tax credits and incentives, Kansas Open Records Act requests, and contracts and grant agreements.
Position Responsibilities:
- Assists in searching for, interpreting, and applying law, court decisions, and other legal authority in the preparation of research memorandums and briefs.
- Research proposed legislation as needed. Researches the legislative history of pertinent pieces of legislation by becoming familiar with the State Library
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Prepares and maintains various legal records and reports.
Intern Qualifications:
- Enrollment in or completion of an accredited college or university law school degree program- L3 (3rd year law student and above).
