IRS VITA Quality Review Volunteer 25-26

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and Tax Counseling for Elderly (TCE) Program at Hartwick College provide FREE income tax preparation and filling services ALL YEAR to low-to-moderate income individuals and families, including those facing physical and other disabilities, international residents and foreign students & scholars unfamiliar with US tax laws. The services are provided by IRS-certified Hartwick Students and coordinated by their Assistant Accounting Professor (CPA). Hartwick College VITA site also connects families to programs and services that can help them maximize their after-tax benefits, such as tax refunds, matched savings programs, budget coaching, financial education, and other benefits.

Reporting To: Site Coordinator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

These people perform Quality Review activities including:

  • Follow IRS site procedures and IRC tax codes.
  • Provide on-site tax expertise, answer tax volunteers’ preparation questions, and assist with any tax-related issues.
  • Review each tax return completed by other volunteers, correcting errors, and providing substantive tax knowledge and guidance to volunteers.  
  • Ensure that each completed tax return is reviewed to ensure it is complete and accurate.
  • Ensure the security of confidential information;
  • Support Site Coordinator and Assist Site Coordinator with operational needs of the site.

 

Qualifications:

The ideal Quality Review performer will have the following education and skill requirements:

  • MUST complete special Quality Review training and pass the IRS Volunteer Tax Preparer certification exam at the Advanced level and Military level; Additional certification preferred.
  • At least one year of experience preparing individual income tax returns; previous experience with volunteer low-income tax assistance programs preferred. 
  • Complete and successfully certify in tax law training,
  • Knowledge of basic computer and tax software applications, including TaxSlayer, email, Internet, Zoom, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting and to work under pressure
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
