Secondary School Principal

 

SUMMARY

The principal is responsible to provide leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of the High School in order to promote the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Principal reports to the Superintendent.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develops and administers school programs consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  2. Promotes a school environment that is safe and conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development, and student learning.
  3. Coordinates with the central office in recruitment and selection of employees, the proper maintenance of employee personnel files, the administration of collective bargaining agreements, corrective action, and other human resource issues.
  4. Keeps or causes to be kept, accurate personal records for all students including cumulative records, grades and attendance.
  5. Keeps or causes to be kept, an accurate record of all monies received.
  6. Administers normal disciplinary measures in the school:
  7. Keeps all appropriate staff members advised of disciplinary measures.
  8. Keeps or causes to be kept, records on all disciplinary measures taken.
  9. Supervises non-certified personnel; including administrative assistants, clerks, custodians, nurses and paraprofessionals who work within the building. This will include making recommendations to the Superintendent for hiring, transferring, or termination of all such non-certified personnel.
  10. Supervises and evaluates all instructional personnel and provides assistance whenever needed.
  11. Makes recommendations of curriculum changes and the implementation of curriculum changes.
  12. Keeps the Superintendent, Board of Trustees, school, and public informed of the education program in the school.
  13. Supports Staff Development programs for all personnel.
  14. Supervises or causes to be supervised all student activities and programs within the school.
  15. Supervises or causes to be supervised all instructional staff in regard to health, safety, and welfare of students and employees.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned to include, but not limited to:
    1. Administration of field trips
    2. Supervising Student Activities
    3. School pictures
    4. Public relations
    5. District attendance duties
    6. Scheduling activities
  17. Serves as facilitator of dialogue between staff members in the school and between this staff and staff members of other schools in the district.
  18. Attends all administrative meetings and implements program suggestions or changes.
  19. Holds periodic meetings of all instructional staff to keep them informed and advised of duties, policies, and possible curriculum changes.
  20. Strives to create a climate of positive relations with and between all personnel in the school and between the school and home.
  21. Reviews educational practices, materials and curriculum and promotes the use of "Best Practices".
  22. Constructs a workable staff handbook to include information of staff, schedules, district policies, and other pertinent information.
  23. Constructs a workable student handbook to include school policies, district policies and other pertinent information.
  24. Screens requests for materials and supplies to determine the relationship of the materials to the program.
  25. Initiates and maintains a School Improvement Process consistent with accreditation requirements.
  26. Involves staff and parents in the accreditation process.
  27. Collects and maintains records and data required for accreditation and completes all required forms for the process.
  28. Uses appropriate software to communicate, track students and data, and complete forms.
  29. Knows and follows federal and state laws and district policies and regulations.

 

OTHER DUTIES

  1. Visits classrooms to observe teachers and students and monitor the teaching of standards, and gives feedback to facilitate growth.
  2. Attends and responds to district committee meetings.
  3. Supervises and evaluates extra-duty staff.
  4. Attends concerts and student-centered events.
  5. Acts as a liaison to other state and county agencies.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor’s Degree
  2. Master’s Degree 
  3. Valid Wyoming PTSB Teaching Certification or the ability to obtain one
  4. Continued Professional Growth

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND MENTAL ABILITY

  1. Knowledge of curriculum and principles of learning.
  2. Knowledge of technology and computer software to track students and their progress towards standards.
  3. Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
  4. Ability to weigh options, think clearly, and evaluate accurately.
  5. Ability to understand and facilitate needs of various personality types.
  6. Ability to make decisions with sound emotional judgment.
  7. Understand the physiological development of children.
  8. Ability to develop a plan and make decisions to facilitate its fulfillment.
  9. Must possess the ability to see, hear, and talk in order to ascertain teacher effectiveness.
  10. Must be able to concentrate with numerous interruptions.
  11. Must be persuasive, alert, creative and have patience, initiative, and reasoning.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

 

This job requires the ability to handle and balance multiple demands at the same time.

The noise level in this environment can be from moderate to quite loud depending upon the activity at the various schools and the particular part of the day.
