Horticulture Intern-Alapocas Run & Wilmington State Parks

This is a hands-on horticultural role with outstanding learning and experience opportunities working with park staff, other interns, volunteers, and youth. The position will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance, improvements, and overall care of the landscape beds throughout both parks. The major project will be to support planning for a neglected landscape bed, working with skilled staff and available technology.

Interns will also participate in intern-wide professional development activities and experiential learning opportunities that may require them to be off-site or away from their placement. Each intern will complete a personalized “demonstration of learning” project. At the conclusion of the internship, all interns will present their projects during a poster session for peers and Delaware State Parks staff.

 

Location

  • Alapocas Run and Wilmington State Parks - Wilmington, Delaware

                                                

Term of Service  

  • 12 weeks - summer 
  • Full-time, 30-35 hours per week, flexible schedule

             

Responsibilities

  • Maintain existing landscape beds
  • Identify and inventory plants located in the landscape beds
  • Present improvement recommendations to staff 
  • Participate in Environmental Stewardship projects, such as invasive species removal and habitat restoration

 

Required Skills

  • Must be personable and able to provide outstanding customer service for diverse park visitors
  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • Ability to work alone with little direct supervision
  • Have a valid driver’s license 
  • Plant identification and landscape maintenance skills preferred
  • Leadership skills
