Description

Kentucky Public Pensions Authority (KPPA) is currently seeking a Paralegal for the Division of Non-Advocacy with the Office of Legal Services. Located in Frankfort, Kentucky, KPPA is responsible for the daily administration of three state administered retirement systems with nearly $29 billion in combined assets. These systems have a membership of approximately 433,461 state and local government employees in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, including state employees, state police officers, city and county employees, as well as non-teaching staff of local school boards and regional universities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Executes confidential legal memoranda including but not limited to summarizing hearing officer recommendations, transcribing administrative hearings, and detailing complex medical reports and records.
  • Processes retired or re-employed requests including a review of the member’s account, drafting and mailing correspondence approving, denying or requesting more information.
  • Tracks and responds to Open Records Requests, including gathering responsive documents, redacting documents, preparing responses and collaborating with attorneys regarding the response.
  • Drafts and maintains disclosure and security breach responses and other documentation required by state and federal laws.
  • Serves as backup recording secretary for board committees.
  • Assists attorneys and the Policy Specialist with preparing, filing, and tracking administrative regulations and amendments to administrative regulations.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in paralegal science or a bachelor's degree with a minor in paralegal studies OR two-year program in paralegal studies OR post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.

 

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of experience as a paralegal or legal secretary.

 

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A Juris Doctorate or a law degree from a college of law will substitute for the education and experience requirement.

 

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

Incumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Travel is required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
