SITE LOCATION: Proviso Township – Illinois
SALARY RANGE: $43,500 to $49,500 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The Academic Specialist serves our U.S. Department of Education-funded Upward Bound Program participants. Specifically, the Academic Specialist provides direct academic guidance to high school youth participating in the program. Most participants are from low-income families and potentially first-generation college-bound students. The Academic Specialist advises, mentors, and provides academic tutoring in High School subjects. The Academic Specialist plans and conducts activities, signing seminars, and workshops on post-secondary preparation. The Academic Specialist provides assistance with completing post-secondary admissions. financial aid and scholarship applications. The Academic Specialist chaperones participants on college tours and visits. The Academic Specialist must maintain a working relationship with area high school administrators and counselors and develop professional relationships with post-secondary admission and financial aid officers. The Academic Specialist assists clients with completing SAT and ACT registration and post-secondary admission-related applications. The Academic Specialist maintains documentation on eligibility and participation. Weekend and evening hours, as well as out-of-town travel, are required.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Education.
2. Experience working with youth, higher education, and educational opportunity programs.
3. Demonstrated ability to engage youth from low-income families.
4. Must have reliable personal transportation.
5. Good communication, organizational, and time management skills.
6. Ability to balance tasks independently and within a team to achieve programmatic mandates.
7. Must be able to work on multiple projects in various settings.
