Communications Intern (DMV)
Title: Communications Internship
Internship Description: Ayuda seeks a communications intern to assist with content creation, messaging, and otherwise grow our visibility. Our interns hit the ground running and are vital to Ayuda communications and development team.
Interns are expected to work at a minimum of 20 hours per week from January till mid-May / two weeks beyond our annual Standing With Immigrants event. While this internship can be completed remotely (although we do require that the candidate is based in the DMV for event attendance), the communications intern will occasionally be asked to attend certain in-person events. The days and times recording internship hours will be planned with the communications manager. The communications intern will hit the ground running and receive training on all the assistance that will be needed.

Responsible to: Communications Manager, Alicja Johnson as well as Development & Communications Associate, Oyin Shoola
Responsibilities:
- Assist with planning and creating content that demonstrates Ayuda’s impact, consistent with our “voice.” Types of content may include, but is not limited to, social media posts, website pages and blog posts, newsletters/email blasts, press materials, etc.
- Help in promotion of external events: Annual spring signature event (SWI), fall donor event, and other small stewardship events.
- Attend outreach events with Ayuda staff and volunteers.
- Research and pursue opportunities to raise Ayuda’s visibility and the visibility of issues impacting our clients.
- Assist with materials requests from other departments within Ayuda.
- Support audit and re-organization of communications file libraries.
- Support Ayuda’s AI/ChatGPT working group, in collaboration with the Development and Communications Associate and the Executive Director
Education/Experience/Skills:
Required:
- Passionate about creating a world in which immigrants thrive.
- Enrolled in communication, public relations, English, marketing, or similar major at an undergraduate institution.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience using Canva to create professional, branded materials.
- Knowledge of communication’s role in meaningful DEI efforts.
- Comfortable working across multiple projects simultaneously in a high-paced environment
- Ability to ask questions and seek out advice, as well as take the initiative to move projects forward when possible.
- Strong oral, written, and visual communication skills.
- An eye for detail.
- Based in the DMV region.
- Completion of background check.
Preferred:
- Advanced proficiency in Spanish, or another language.
- Experience creating and editing video content.
- Experience creating social media posts for Linkedin, Instagram, Facebook, and BlueSky on behalf of a brand or an organization.
- Experience using CoPilot, or other LLM tools responsibly.
- Previous experience helping, supporting, or working with immigrants/immigration groups.
Commitment: We are looking for a spring intern who can dedicate 20 - 24 hours per week for 12 – 14 weeks to provide programmatic and administrative support. The internship would begin in January and wrap up by mid-May. Interns will be asked to assist through our Standing With Immigrants event in late April/early May and two weeks beyond for debrief/follow-ups needed. The exact start and end dates are flexible. Interns are expected to assist with internship responsibilities at least 2 days a week, which can be completed remotely or in office. Interns can assist remotely but will be required to join certain events in the DMV region during the course of the internship.
Compensation: This internship offers a stipend of $200 to cover the costs associated with completion of in-person days (transportation, gas, parking, food, etc.). Stipends are determined based on the number of in person days per week the specific internship requires. Interns are welcome to complete more in person days than required but such days are not included in the internship stipend. We are equally happy to work with your institution or university to ensure that you are able to receive academic credit for the internship if applicable.
Technology Needed: We will provide the intern with a laptop, and they will need to have access to reliable internet connection for video conferences and email communication when working remotely. The communications intern will need to have a personal cell phone with a working camera that they are comfortable using for photography during the internship.
