Marketing and Communications Intern
Finding Common Purpose (FCP) makes philanthropic investments to empower communities through publicly accessible and actionable outcomes data that tracks progress towards collectively held north-star goals and outcomes. It was founded by entrepreneur Andrew Wolk, its lead donor, in order to maximize impact and help improve the quality of life for many others across the U.S., FCP’s goal is to build a collaborative of funders, pooling resources, to maximize impact.
FCP is seeking a creative, strategic, and organized Marketing and Communications intern (15-20 hrs/wk). This role will support our internal communications efforts including developing engaging content on a weekly basis, supporting the knowledge management function of the organization, and implementing our communications plan. This role will also work with an external communications agency to strengthen our national brand presence and drive an outcomes movement. Finally it will provide support as needed to the development team.
The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller with exceptional writing skills, a collaborative mindset, demonstrated interest in the social sector and experience aligning communications with organizational goals.
Responsibilities
- Support development of regular communications content such as LinkedIn posts, grantee spotlights, newsletter etc. This will involve identifying national, economic, technology or social sector news that are relevant to FCP’s mission & goals. Collaboration with internal teams and leadership is expected to ensure messaging consistency and alignment with FCP’s strategy and goals.
- Identify and translate field & grant learnings & interviews into blog posts, case studies or practice briefs
- Help draft and finalize website content to support our ongoing website revamp
- Track engagement metrics and identify opportunities for internal communication improvement/effectiveness
- Provide insight and feedback on brand storytelling and positioning initiatives.
- Support as needed 1.) our external communications agency, the Castle Group to implement our larger communications strategy and 2.) our grant making team, Effective Philanthropy Advisors to develop field resources aligned to building an outcomes movement
Qualifications and skills
- Strong background and/or demonstrated interest in either communications & marketing or the role of the social sector in shaping economic opportunity and life quality
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities.
- Demonstrated interest in Finding Common Purpose’s mission and values, with a deep belief in building collaboration, understanding, and shared purpose across diverse audiences.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Policy/Political Science, Economics or related disciplines
- Prior communications experience including (but not limited to) undergraduate on campus/internship experiences. This can include writing for a volunteer position, student club/paper, personal project, or via social media
Time & pay expectations
- This is a part time role, averaging 15-20 hours/week at $25/hour
- This is a 4-month internship, starting in early November and ending in late February/early March. (Dates can be clearly specified before start date)

- Deepen your knowledge of the social sector and the different actors that interact to impact population-level outcomes in the United States. Specifically, you will gain insight into issues around affordable housing, food security, childhood wellbeing and educational achievement (cradle-career approach), and economic mobility.
- Learn about place-based partnerships and collective action approaches to tackling systems-level issues on the local and regional level.
- Improve your writing, narrative development and field research skills
- Play a significant role in crafting the public tone, voice and presence of a national foundation
- Develop and improve your project management and collaborative skillset.
- Strengthen your proficiency in non-profit communication & marketing tools, processes and knowledge
