Cancer Research Internship for Undergraduates

Through the University of Colorado Cancer Center's Cancer Research Experience for Undergraduates (CREU), each summer 16 - 26 college undergraduate students are given the opportunity to spend ten weeks in our laboratories at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. CREU is supported by R25CA240122 and the University of Colorado Cancer Center.  An additional 1 - 4 students will be selected to be funded through the American Cancer Society's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Internship.

The application process for both the CREU and SURF internships is the same.

The goal of the program is to engage scientific curiosity in the next generation of scientists, challenging qualified college undergraduates to consider a cancer-related career in the future.

This paid internship is ten weeks in length and students work on a project in a research lab, attend twice-weekly lectures on various cancer-related topics, participate in clinical translational workshops, join career roundtable sessions, engage in several social networking events, and present their work in a poster session at the end of the ten weeks. All levels of college undergraduates may apply.

CREU Fellowship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled at an undergraduate institution.
  • Be able to devote 40 hours per week to this program.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or eligible for employment in the United States.

SURF applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be rising college sophomores, juniors, or seniors at an undergraduate institution.
  • Be able to devote 40 hours per week to this program.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or eligible for employment in the United States.
  • College freshmen are not eligible to apply for the SURF Fellowship but should consider applying for the CREU Fellowship instead.

Both CREU and SURF are open to in-state and out-of-state students and additional housing stipend will be provided for out-of-state students.
