Energy Market Intern
SUMMARY:
MEMS is an energy trading company located in the Galleria/Uptown area of Houston, TX, and is currently seeking full-time, paid interns for Summer 2026 to join our Energy Market Rotational Internship Program.
This immersive, 12-week program is designed to expose interns to key departments within the energy trading industry through two 6-week rotations within Trading, Middle Office and/or Back Office. Interns will gain hands-on experience and exposure in market analysis, risk functions, and U.S. energy trading operations, across multiple commodities while applying classroom knowledge in a dynamic, real-world environment. Rotation opportunities will depend on candidate interests and business needs.
Top-performing interns may be considered for a full-time development program upon graduation to jump-start a career in energy trading at a fast-paced, collaborative, and globally active trading firm.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learn and apply core concepts of risk management within a global energy trading environment.
- Participate in two 6-week departmental rotations within Trading, Middle Office and/or Back Office functions.
- Support the Back Office team by:
- Analyzing market structures, trading standards, and compliance requirements (including SOX) while supporting accurate invoicing and payment processes.
- Monitoring cash flow, assisting with forecasting and reconciliations, and supporting margin calculations
- Collaborating with Operations and Front Office teams to validate settlements and contribute to process improvements across financial operations.
- Support the Middle Office team by:
- Gathering and analyzing financial statements, credit ratings, and related data to establish and manage counterparty credit lines.
- Managing outgoing/incoming parent guarantees and tracking expiration timelines.
- Coordinating with the Mitsui USA Credit Team, MEMS Compliance, and Legal on credit documentation, including guaranty agreements and NDAs.
- Support the Energy Trading & Marketing team with:
- Daily market reporting, supply/demand analysis, and creation of market analysis tools.
- Attending industry conferences or events, as required.
- Support special projects, process improvements, and ad hoc assignments across departments, providing both administrative and analytical assistance as needed.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
- Computer skills including intermediate level proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Ability to build strong professional relationships and collaborate effectively.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Strong interest in trading and/or trading operations.
- Demonstrated eagerness to learn, solid quantitative/analytical skills, and general awareness of energy markets.
- Academic background in Math, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Statistics.
- Interest in commodities, finance, economics, or the energy sector.
- Rising college senior (exceptionally strong juniors may be considered).
- Willingness to relocate to Houston after graduation for full-time opportunities.
- Participation in energy trading, investment, and risk management programs like TRIP is a plus.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Fluent verbal and written skills in English.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Physical demands include:
- Prolonged periods of sitting and may need to routinely move around to communicate with different groups
