At BWXT, our interns perform challenging tasks in their field of study while developing and delivering unique solutions for use in a nuclear environment. A BWXT internship not only provides valuable on the job training but allows you to be a part of something bigger!
BWXT offers paid internships along with a housing stipend for those interns whose home of record is more than 50 miles from Barberton, OH. Internships will last approximately 10-12 weeks with the opportunity for extension. At the end of the internship, each intern has the opportunity to present their completed work/ assigned projects to the leadership team.
Your Day to Day as a Design Engineering Intern:
BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, Inc. is seeking a motivated Welder & Machinist Intern to join our Design Engineering team. This role will provide hands-on experience in a dynamic environment, working on a variety of projects under experienced technicians.
CNC and Manual Machining:
- Create, edit, and verify CNC programming for mills and lathes.
- Set up and operate both manual and CNC mills and lathes.
- Utilize drawings and measuring devices (micrometers, calipers, etc.) for part inspections.
- Manage ordering of consumables and tools as needed.
Fabrication Tasks:
- Perform manual welding on carbon steel, Inconel, and stainless steel.
- Utilize CNC plasma, shears, saws, grinders, and torches in fabrication processes.
- Rig and lift complex components weighing up to 10 tons.
- Set up fixtures for weldments and inspect parts using measuring tools.
Facility Maintenance:
- Conduct preventative maintenance on shop equipment, including mills, lathes, and welders.
- Collaborate with contractors to ensure all facility maintenance tasks are completed effectively.
Quoting and Proposal Tasks:
- Assist in quoting jobs, considering hours and material costs.
- Prepare purchase requests and liaise with the purchasing department for material procurement.
Problem Solving and Troubleshooting:
- Demonstrate initiative in resolving various challenges with minimal guidance.
- Develop innovative solutions for unique fabrication and maintenance issues, such as jammed valves, broken bolts or tools, and instrumentation troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications:
- Completed or currently attending a machining or welding trade school program.
- Familiarity with welding and machining processes is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication and teamwork capabilities.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
