TITLE:                            LITERACY COACH
 
QUALIFICATIONS:          1.   Valid New Jersey Reading Specialist Certificate and significant successful experience in teaching children in grades K-6 to read and write.
                                          2.   Extensive knowledge of Balanced Literacy Framework: Reader’s Workshop, Writer’s Workshop and Word Study;
                                          3.   Experience in assessing student skills and knowledge in reading and writing, using a variety of formative, summative, and benchmark assessments;
                                          4.   Experience with utilizing assessment results to inform instruction.
                                          5.   Knowledge of effective techniques in classroom management and instructional planning for literacy instruction.
                                          6.   Knowledge of theory and practice of teaching writing as a process and product, especially as it relates to early elementary age children.
                                          7.   Experience and personal characteristics that predict success in coaching other professionals with varying levels of experience and knowledge.
                                          8.   Experience and personal characteristics that predict success in acting as a resource for literacy educators.
                                          9.   Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status and Mantoux verification.

JOB LOCATION:            John Fenwick Academy; Salem Middle School
 
JOB GOAL:                    To share knowledge about the theory and practice of literacy instruction of children and their experience with their colleagues in an effective way. The Literacy Coach is a key figure in recognizing, developing, and implementing effective,                                                        continuing, and support staff development to promote student academic achievement.
 
 PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
 1.     Model best practices and strategies on latest research, data, and educational trends.
 
 2.     Make ongoing classroom visitations as appropriate and necessary to be able to perform the duties of a literacy coach.
3.      Provide content knowledge and resources about learning and teaching literacy – including:

  • Teaching strategies;
  • Assessment techniques;
  • Assessment of reading and writing skills;
  • Interpretation of assessment results;
  • Classroom routines; and
  • Practices that promote literacy

4.      Provide information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative literacy practices through various activities such as:

  • Individual discussions (informal and formal);
  • Coaching sessions;
  • Demonstration lessons with pre-and post-discussion/analysis;
  • Study groups or Book Clubs;
  • Staff meetings;
  • Professional development and/or in-service training programs; and
  • Workshops

5.      Use student work and assessment results as rationales and evidence to assist teachers in making decisions about instructional activities.
6.      Participate in professional development activities to build capacity as a Literacy Coach and keep abreast of current research-based literacy practices.
7.      Maintain the confidentiality of schools, teachers, and classrooms.
8.      Present a courteous and professional demeanor and appearance at all times.
9.      Model the characteristics of a reflective professional who monitors and evaluates one’s own professional activities with the goal or continual growth and development.
10.    Assists teachers in developing strategies for effective student learning with an emphasis on reading and writing.
11.    Facilitates the use of data for increased student achievement.
12.    Facilitates the implementation and use of technology for increased student achievement.
13.    Implements ways to facilitate parental involvement and parent education in order to increase student learning.
14.    Models effective strategies for teaching ALL learners in the areas of reading and writing.
15.    Supports teachers in the implementation of the student learning plans, school and district initiatives in all curricular areas.
16.    Serves as a consultant in the selection of instructional materials, supplies and equipment.
17.    Involved with the implementation and monitoring of school improvement plans, district improvement plan, school professional development plans, and district professional development plan.
 
 
 
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT:     Work year and salary to be determined by the Board.
 
EVALUATION:       Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified staff.

Wage or Salary Information

Certified Teaching Staff:  Salary Range $ 58,999  – $95,621
