Agronomist – Crop Scouting & Fertility Management

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Agronomist to lead crop scouting, soil sampling, and fertility management across a diverse range of crops. This position plays a key role in monitoring crop health, identifying issues early, and developing fertility and crop protection plans that optimize yield potential and input efficiency. The ideal candidate is passionate about agronomy, precision agriculture, and working directly with producers to deliver real results in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Field Scouting & Sampling

  • Conduct regular field scouting for weeds, insects, diseases, and overall crop health.
  • Collect and document data on plant growth stages, nutrient deficiencies, and pest pressure.
  • Perform or coordinate soil, tissue, and fertilizer sampling following company protocols.
  • Utilize digital scouting and mapping tools for recordkeeping and analysis.
  • Work with planting and application equipment operators to optimize field performance.

Fertility Planning

  • Analyze soil test results to develop customized fertility recommendations for each field.
  • Prepare seasonal nutrient management plans that align with yield goals, soil conditions, and environmental standards.
  • Recommend fertilizer blends, rates, and timing to optimize nutrient efficiency.
  • Interpret soil test data and explain the agronomic rationale behind each plan.

Crop Protection Planning

  • Develop integrated crop protection programs to manage weeds, insects, and diseases.
  • Stay current on pesticide regulations, product performance, and resistance management practices.
  • Provide scouting-based treatment recommendations and ensure compliance with label requirements.
  • Support applicators and operations teams with accurate herbicide and fertilizer prescriptions and mixing instructions.

Data Management & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate scouting records, sampling data, and treatment recommendations in agronomic software systems.
  • Provide reports and updates to growers, agronomy managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Utilize precision agriculture tools and drone imagery to enhance scouting efficiency and field insight.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, or related field.
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in crop scouting, soil fertility, or agronomic consulting.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of crop production, pest management, and nutrient cycles.
  • Skills: Proficient in soil test interpretation and fertility planning; experience with scouting software and GPS-enabled sampling tools; excellent observation, communication, and recordkeeping skills; ability to work independently outdoors in varying conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) credential.
  • Familiarity with precision ag tools, variable-rate technology, and drone scouting.
  • Knowledge of local cropping systems and agronomic practices.
  • Private pesticide applicator's license (or willingness to obtain).
  • CDL (or willingness to obtain).
