Legal Internship - for current law school students
Law school student Internship/Co-Op - Fall 2025/ Winter 2026
at the Boston Housing Authority's Grievance and Appeals Department
General Description:
The Legal Intern will be a current law school student or recent law school graduate and will be working closely with the Grievance and Appeals Director or her designee(s), to learn all aspect of BHA and the Grievances and Appeals department and systems. The Department of Grievances and Appeals conducts approximately 50 hearings per week, presided over by Hearing Officers, to review BHA actions, which affect clients’ statuses on waiting lists and eligibility for continued participation in BHA programs. Hearing Officers issue written decisions either upholding or reversing the BHA action.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Grievances and Appeals Administrator:
- Review hearing records and write hearing decisions for Hearing Officer to review
- Assist in conducting G&A hearings
- Answer in preparing mailings and filings
- Answer and return phone calls
- Lead and assist in other ongoing projects as assigned
- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent reasoning and analytical skills
- Ability to interpret and apply regulations and other applicable law.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred.
- Knowledge of public housing and/or Section 8 programs or prior experience in working with low-income individuals is a plus.
- Ability to work efficiently, work effectively, and meet deadlines
- Highly organized and detail oriented;
- Ability to manage highly confidential material in a mature, professional manner.
