Director of Marketing and Communications

POSITION PURPOSE / JOB SUMMARY

SLOCA is seeking a Director of Marketing & Communications to develop, drive, and oversee marketing that drives enrollment growth for the school and revenue at the school’s thrift store and online business.

JOB STRUCTURE AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Full-Time, Year-Round, Exempt Employee Status
  • 40 hours per week, benefits, PTO
  • The DMC reports to the Chief Advancement Officer
  • The DMC oversees the Graphic Designer, Communications Coordinator, and the Videography Designer
  • The DMC oversees the school store staff/development
  • The DMC also works with other staff (Admissions, Fred and Betty’s, office, Wisdom Wonder Project team (online math videos subscription service), Development Director and team, etc.)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required:
    • 3+ years of marketing experience
    • 2+ years of management experience
    • College degree
    • An excellent eye for design and alignment with the SLOCA brand
  • Qualifications:
    • Fluent in the latest technology/software pertinent to the role
    • Possesses excellent writing and public relations skills
    • Knowledgeable concerning the latest developments in digital marketing communications
    • Understands graphic design principles
    • Has strong journalistic skills
    • A willingness to learn about and support passionately the mission of SLO Classical Academy
    • Committed to supporting and upholding the school’s unique makeup as non-sectarian and accessible to families and employees from various backgrounds and beliefs
    • Clear a background check and TB screening
    • Ability to carry out duties as described below

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Enrollment Marketing

  • Oversee the development and implementation of a full marketing plan that accurately reflects SLOCA’s culture, image, mission, and vision and reaches SLOCA enrollment goals. 
  • Implement an effective marketing strategy through word-of-mouth campaigns, online marketing, external marketing, print-based marketing, social media, and event-based marketing.  
  • Develop and implement effective campaigns through the above channels that align with the marketing plan. 
  • Report on the effectiveness of the above marketing activities, make recommendations for what to do more of and what to do less of based on the number of tours, inquiries, and intents to enroll generated. 
  • Coordinate all publications and advertisements, including recruitment pieces, short videos, targeted emails, invitations to special events, parent meeting information, and other communication materials. 
  • Develop and manage the marketing and advertising budget, reporting on ROI’s of each investment to the ELT and finance team. 
  • Create content for and maintain all social media channels for the school (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), updating regularly with consistent messaging that aligns with the school’s mission
  • Work closely with the Director of Admissions to create marketing and communications strategies that promote and enhance recruitment.

Other Marketing

  • Come alongside Fred and Betty’s Thrift Store Manager and team to improve sales and revenue to benefit SLOCA through marketing and social media support. 
  • Support the Wisdom Wonder Project team to improve sales and revenue for SLOCA’s online business through website promotion, ads, and social media. 
  • Work with SLOCA’s Den bookstore to improve marketing to SLOCA families.
  • Assist the Development Director in creating supportive marketing materials for campaigns and events. 

Communication

  • Ensure an effective and smooth communication process school-wide to reduce repetitive information and ensure clear and accurate communication. 
  • Oversee and monitor the school’s brand guides, ensuring that publications follow the organization’s branding and messaging guidelines. 
  • Provide some writing and editing support for the Head of School, other leadership team members, and staff.
  • Manage media relations by identifying newsworthy events, writing press releases, and cultivating strong collaborative partnerships with local media.

Leadership

  • Be a visible SLOCA ambassador; participate/lead as required at appropriate meetings and events
  • Attend strategy and growth meetings with BLT, create strategic marketing/communications and merchandising goals to accomplish assigned organizational goals, and execute these with the team.
  • Integrate knowledge of our customers (current families, prospective families, and those who identify with our message) in all efforts.
  • Prepare quarterly reports for the finance team for marketing and The Den. 
  • Lead and grow marketing/communications and merchandising team members, helping them understand SLOCA goals and their role in achieving them.

Staff members are expected to adhere to all Administrative Directives as well as any applicable SLOCA Policies, including those specifically outlined in the Employee Manual

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Able to lift up to 20 pounds on a limited basis.  Able to sit at a desk or in meetings for long periods of time and move about campuses easily.  Able to work irregular hours if needed for school events and meetings, etc.
