Project Description:
This research project is a continuation of an existing project that examines the relationship between the presence of street lighting and other elements of the built environment on sexual assault, gender based violence, and/or perceptions of safety. The student will have some latitude to determine the direction of the project, and will have access to data on sexual assaults, street lighting, 311 calls for service and other relevant health and city government data sets.
Goals/Objectives of Project:
Identify elements of the built environment that correlate with occurrence of reported sexual assaults
Research avenues for further study by LMPHW
Collaborate with stakeholders in the city to better understand what contributes to feelings of safety and belonging in public spaces
Based on findings, recommend demonstration or pilot projects for LMPHW and stakeholders to undertake. (If time/budget permits, the student may also be able to participate in planning and execution of the projects).
Design an evaluation for the demonstration project
Required Skills:
• Ability to parse crime data to determine which incidences are relevant.
• Ability to analyze statistical data and interpret research findings.
• Strong interpersonal skills for conducting surveys and interviews.
• Commitment to ethical research practices and confidentiality.
• Capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Skills:
• Background in criminology, urban planning, or related fields.
• Experience with GIS software and data visualization tools.
• Proficiency in academic writing and presentation of research findings.

Estimated project duration: (3 months or 6 months) (All projects are 15 hours per week)
Working On-Site or Remotely: Remote with occasional on-site if the student is available.
