Prosecutor Intern
Purpose of Position
The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking highly motivated, responsible law students who are seeking courtroom and trial experience for a paid summer internship. The purpose of the position is to prosecute misdemeanor and felony criminal cases by representing the citizens of Greene County, State of Missouri, in criminal court under the supervision of a licensed attorney, pursuant to Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13 (Rule 13).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Appear in court to represent the citizens of Greene County in Associate and Circuit Courts, under the supervision of a licensed attorney pursuant to Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13. This representation will include handling misdemeanors and/or felony cases for jury trials, bench trials, preliminary hearings, arraignments, change of plea hearings, motions, probation violation hearings, reappearances, and other criminal legal proceedings.
Review misdemeanor and traffic cases submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for filing. With the supervision of a licensed attorney, make a determination as to whether to file a criminal charge, decline a criminal charge, or request further investigation. Prepared charging documents to be signed by a licensed, supervising attorney.
Accurately document all case activity with appropriate docket entries in the case management system.
Return telephone calls, emails, and correspondence in a timely manner.
Negotiate cases with defense attorneys for an appropriate disposition.
Prepare and draft pleadings, motions, and responses to be signed by a licensed, supervising attorney and filed with the court.
Research legal issues and case law as it relates to issues and cases they are working on.
Contact victims and witnesses as necessary in the charging process to keep them informed of the status of a case, meet with them to prepare them for testifying, and answer any questions.
Maintain the Rule 13 certification and comply with all requirements as set out by Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13.
Maintain the highest level of integrity in all relationships which includes, but is not limited to: law enforcement, victims, witnesses, judges, clerks, and defense counsel.
Arrive at work punctually and without unexcused absences.
Be a team player and assist other prosecutors to achieve the primary mission of the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office which is to ensure a safe and secure community, with justice for all.
Work on special projects or case assignments when directed by the Greene County Prosecutor, Chief Assistant, and/or supervising First Assistant.
Follow the directives and policies of the Greene County Prosecutor.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Applications will only be accepted from law students who have obtained their Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13 certification and are currently enrolled at an accredited law school.
