Service will primarily occur at the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana and partner agencies.
Service Position Purpose & Summary
AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteering that empowers thousands of members across the U.S. to serve in their communities. Feeding Louisiana, the state food bank association, will place 14 AmeriCorps members at food bank facilities throughout the state to support community members with critical food insecurity needs.
Feeding Louisiana refers to its network of AmeriCorps as its “NourishCorps,” emphasizing the distinct purpose of these members to expand the ability of the food banks to nourish people in need. NourishCorps members will join a cohort of statewide AmeriCorps members dedicated to combating food insecurity and will gain personal and professional leadership skills, training, mentorship from food bank and Feeding Louisiana staff, and relationships with a supportive network of fellow members.
The NourishCorps Field Specialist Member will play a key role in expanding the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana’s nutrition education and child nutrition initiatives. This member will focus on providing interactive, community-based cooking demonstrations and pop-ups, distributing nutrition education resources and tabling at community events, and supporting child nutrition programs such as the Backpack Program, Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Service will include collaboration with schools, community centers, and partner agencies across northwest Louisiana.
About This Unique Position Within the Food Bank
The NourishCorps Nutrition Education Member will serve in a unique position at the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, expanding the food bank’s capacity to engage and educate neighbors through hands-on nutrition and community outreach. Core service activities will include:
- Planning and conducting pop-up cooking demonstrations with food bank products at Martha’s Market food pantry and partner agencies using recipes that promote healthy, affordable meal preparation.
- Creating and distributing nutrition education materials to pantry visitors, schools, partner agencies, and at community-based events to reinforce healthy eating habits and meal planning.
- Supporting the food bank’s child nutrition programs, including Backpack Program distributions, site coordination for summer and afterschool meal programs, and collaboration with elementary schools and community centers on meal enrollment and outreach.
- Tabling and representing the food bank at community events, fairs, and resource gatherings to share information about food bank programs.
- Collecting participation data and feedback from cooking demos and nutrition outreach to help improve program design and neighbor engagement.
Service Position Activities Will Also Include
- Performing duties in accordance with food bank safety policies and Feeding Louisiana’s NourishCorps member handbook.
- Attending and completing all NourishCorps and food bank required training and orientations.
- Traveling to other Louisiana food banks for training, service, and networking opportunities with NourishCorps members throughout the state.
- Meeting with food bank site supervisor and Feeding Louisiana staff as scheduled.
- Planning, shopping, preparing, cooking, and creating healthy meals for cooking demonstrations and pop-ups; conducting cooking demonstrations and pop-ups at Martha’s Market pantry and partner agencies.
- Performing programmatic duties with site recruitment and compliance with the Backpack, SFSP, and CACFP child nutrition programs.
- Providing neighbors, clients and sites with program and pantry information; tabling at community events and resource fairs.
- Providing referral services for neighbors when appropriate.
- Maintaining accurate program data and records for evaluation and reporting purposes.
Qualifications
- Must pass an AmeriCorps National Service Criminal History check.
- Must obtain a Servsafe food handler’s certificate during orientation.
- Must have a Louisiana driver’s license or state ID.
- Must be 17 years of age or older.
- Must have high school diploma or be in program earning high school equivalency degree.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Must have access to reliable and consistent means of transportation.
- Must pass an MVR driving check.
NourishCorps Member Benefits & Member Experience
- Member living allowance of up to $11,000 possible based on serving 900 hours throughout the 11/3/2025–7/31/2026 term, distributed as $550 every bi-weekly pay period.[FM1]
- Upon successful completion of 900 hours of service, the member will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.
