Service will primarily occur at the Second Harvest Food Bank’s warehouses and pantries located at each of the New Orleans, Lafayette and Houma facilities. 1 member will be placed at each of those locations.
Service Position Purpose & Summary
AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteering that empowers thousands of members across the U.S. to serve in their communities. Feeding Louisiana, the state food bank association, will place 14 AmeriCorps members at food bank facilities throughout the state to support community members with critical food insecurity needs.
Feeding Louisiana refers to its network of AmeriCorps as its “NourishCorps,” emphasizing the distinct purpose of these members to expand the ability of the food banks to nourish people in need. NourishCorps members will join a cohort of statewide AmeriCorps members dedicated to combating food insecurity and will gain personal and professional leadership skills, training, mentorship from food bank and Feeding Louisiana staff, and relationships with a supportive network of fellow members.
NourishCorps On-Site Pantry and Warehouse Members will serve in a dual role, expanding the food bank’s capacity to meet community needs by serving directly with neighbors at the on-site food pantry and participating in warehouse operations and logistics. This includes coordinating pantry intake and distributions, connecting neighbors with available nutrition resources, and preparing food boxes for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) “Senior Food Box” program.
About This Unique Position Within the Food Bank
The NourishCorps Pantry and Warehouse Members will serve in a unique position at Second Harvest food Bank’s facilities in New Orleans, Lafayette, and Houma, expanding the food bank’s capacity to connect neighbors with nutritious food and maintain efficient warehouse operations. Members in this dual role will engage directly with neighbors through the on-site pantry while strengthening food distribution systems behind-the-scenes. The members will:
- Welcome and engage with neighbors at the on-site food pantry, providing information about available programs, resources, and what they need to bring to the pantry distribution; support neighbors through the intake and food distribution process.
- Accompany neighbors as they shop in the on-site pantry, helping them make decisions that best suit their family’s needs; provide operational support including bagging food products and loading neighbor vehicles.
- Support the organization and efficient movement of food products, including packing boxes and restocking pantry shelves.
- Administer pantry and program applications, working one-on-one with neighbors as they understand and navigate the process.
- Contact seniors from the CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program, also known as “Senior Food Box) waitlist, coordinate reminders for upcoming distributions, and prepare CSFP boxes for delivery.
- Provide neighbors and partner agencies with program and pantry information.
Service Position Activities Will Also Include
- Performing duties in accordance with food bank safety policies and Feeding Louisiana’s NourishCorps member handbook.
- Attending and completing all NourishCorps and food bank required training and orientations.
- Traveling to other Louisiana food banks for training, service, and networking opportunities with NourishCorps members throughout the state.
- Meeting with food bank site supervisor and Feeding Louisiana staff as scheduled.
- Inputting data into computer systems, supporting organization of programmatic operations, and supporting organization of client records and data under supervision.
- Providing referral services for the clients.
- Inspecting product donations to ensure that all safety and sanitation standards are met under supervision.
Qualifications
- Must pass an AmeriCorps National Service Criminal History check.
- Must have a Louisiana driver’s license or state ID.
- Must be 17 years of age or older.
- Must have high school diploma or be in program earning high school equivalency degree.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Must have access to reliable and consistent means of transportation.[FM1]
NourishCorps Member Benefits & Member Experience
- Member living allowance of up to $11,000 possible based on serving 900 hours throughout the 11/3/2025–7/31/2026 term, distributed as $550 every bi-weekly pay period.[FM2]
- Upon successful completion of 900 hours of service, the member will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.
