2026 U.S. Open Mid-Term Championship Administration Internship (Southampton, NY)

Position Timeframe: March 09, 2026 – June 30, 2026

The 2026 U.S. Open Championship will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Southampton, NY June 15-21, 2026. This will be the 6th time Shinnecock Hills will host a U.S. Open.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

The Championship Office is a fast-paced working environment. The Championship Office Administration Intern must have the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks at once. On a daily basis, the intern will find themselves working in a typical office environment where strong organizational and communication skills will be necessary. The ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting boxes and manual labor may be required at times, specifically in the months and weeks leading up to the championship. This internship will require a minimum (40) hour work week, which will lengthen to 80+ hours (including weekends) as the championship approaches. An internship with the United States Golf Association and the 2026 U.S. Open Championship is a tremendous first step toward a career in the fields of special event management and professional sports.

The Championship Office Administration Intern will assist in the day-to-day administrative management of the Championship Office as well as a strong emphasis on the championship volunteer program. Eventually, an intern will focus solely on either the Volunteer Program or the Parking & Transportation/Public Safety plan for the 2026 U.S. Open Championship. Both roles will be responsible for the advance set-up and proper wrap-up/breakdown of respective areas post-championship.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS:

  • Answering incoming e-mails and phone calls to the 2026 U.S. Open championship office.
  • Preparing mailings, opening incoming mail, handling UPS shipping/receiving.
  • Maintain all necessary office supplies and order items as necessary. May require local trips to pick-up items as needed.
  • Assist in taking and distributing notes for meetings as necessary.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM:

  • The Volunteer Program for the 2026 U.S. Open consists of more than 3,000 volunteers assigned to 14 volunteer committees. Duties will include:
  • Assisting with the creation of various correspondence, including emails, presentations, and newsletters.
  • Organize and facilitate printing needs with designated vendors as necessary.
  • Help create plan for volunteer training and credential distribution, including organizing training session materials, credential packets and presenting presentations with necessary championship information.
  • Manage the response to concerns, questions, and requests of volunteers before, during, and post championship.
  • Assist with the training and onboarding of assigned Committee Chairs with tasks such as volunteer scheduling, site visits & walk-throughs, and overall management of their designated volunteer committees.
  • Taking the lead on setting up, organizing, and tearing down volunteer areas on championship grounds.
  • Oversee and manage credential inputting, organizing, and printing of championship credentials as necessary.

PARKING & TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC SAFETY:

The Public Safety and Parking & Transportation intern will work directly with the Championship Manager on comprehensive private security, parking, and transportation plans. This includes advance setup and coordination with numerous vendors and USGA staff to ensure each parking lot & vendor has what it needs to run a smooth operation.

  • In conjunction with the Championship Manager, the intern will liaise with the local and state police and assist them in the execution of their duties. This includes developing post duties for each traffic and security post.
  • Coordinate the USGA effort for all law enforcement meetings, including the preparation of all printed materials, and assisting with the creation and organization of presentations.
  • Coordinate with the shuttle/bus companies to make sure the appropriate number of shuttle buses are in rotation at the correct times and consistent with documented schedules.
  • Coordinate with the operations team and respective vendors to ensure necessary tents, bike racks, signage, restrooms, and all other equipment are in place at parking lots or depots before the start of the championship.
  • Oversee and manage credential inputting, organizing, and printing of championship credentials as necessary.

HOURLY PAY: $17.00/hr (time and a half once 40hrs is reached)

  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office software – above-average knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook, & PowerPoint.
  • Ability to prepare presentations to include PowerPoint and printed materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and execute detailed plans – able to anticipate and analyze problems and provide logical solutions.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
