Position Definition
Under general direction, assumes responsibility for the cleaning, minor repair and general maintenance of assigned County buildings in a geographic area or on a specific shift.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the full supervisory level in the series of Building Services Worker. This level is not included in the flexible classification series; promotion to this level is competitive. The majority of the workday is spent on supervisory tasks. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Building Services Worker in that the latter classification functions as a first line supervisor, spends the majority of the work day in the field performing building services tasks and inspecting facilities.
Duties
- Interacts with the public, patients, visitors and other staff in accordance with customer service standards;
- Completes tasks with an attitude of teamwork and cooperation in accordance with department procedures and standards;
- Uses precautionary and protective measures to avoid selfexposure and crosscontamination;
- Handles and disposes of contaminated trash according to established procedures;
- Maintains and respects patient and customer confidentiality.
- Plans organizes, and schedules building services activities.
- Makes recommendations to superiors on employee selection, promotion, and assists with the assessment and development of disciplinary actions including the writing of formal disciplinary documents.
- Schedules, directs, oversees and trains subordinate County personnel and/or special program personnel who are engaged in building service activities.
- Prepares and/or finalizes formal performance appraisals for subordinates.
- Schedules and chairs regular supervisory staff meetings.
- Estimates time and materials needed to complete a job.
- Assists superiors in preparing budget recommendations for the unit.
- Works with the Purchasing division to develop purchase orders for the acquisition of supplies, equipment, and services.
- Maintains inventory records of equipment and supplies; provides for delivery of needed supplies and equipment to service areas; prepares work activity reports.
- Maintains effective work relationships with the public, supply vendors, office personnel, and other departmental employees.
- Investigates and resolves complaints from building occupants regarding custodial services.
- Acts as a liaison between employees, customers and department management.
- Oversees electronic payroll processes for subordinates and verifies submission of electronic cell phone certifications.
- Retains and processes receipts for payment of County purchasing and gasoline card purchases.
- Develops and implements safety protocols, safety training programs, and develops safety related documents.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials, and may be exposed to infectious waste, noxious fumes, dust and loud noises.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Three (3) years as a Senior Building Services Worker in the Kern County classification system or equivalent, or Six (6) years of janitorial experience, including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required.
SOME POSITIONS MAY REQUIRE:
Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License.
Candidates may be required to pass a thorough background investigation. Except for minor traffic violations, misdemeanor and felony convictions may be disqualifying.
Knowledge of: the methods, materials and equipment used in building services work; modern supervisory practices; basic bookkeeping practices and mathematics; OSHA requirements and proper safety procedures.
Ability to: communicate effectively with staff, coworkers and supervision about completed and pending tasks; plan, organize and schedule building services activities; train and direct subordinate personnel; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain accurate records; maintain effective work relationships with departmental representatives; interact effectively with the public.
