GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This position cleans and maintains the sanitation of the animal shelter, animal cages, and common areas. This position interactions with the general public by providing customer services for those looking for their lost animal or looking to adopt or foster an animal.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To successfully perform this position, an individual must be able to perform the following:
- Observes, cares, and attends to all animals; completes medical intake on animals including vaccinations, illness/rabies prevention, blood draws, and general examinations; reports any signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes; and, frequently contacts animal care providers
- Submits timely written reports and paperwork regarding an animal's well-being (including a medical intake report), fosters, adoptions, and information regarding investigations, outcomes, a description of events, and individuals involved
- Performs facility upkeep by cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining the animal shelter, kennels, communal areas, and equipment for feeding animals
- Communicates with and assists visitors to the animal shelter with animal adoption, animal transfer/foster, and animal reclaims, providing feedback on animals within the shelter and assists with visitors meeting animals available for adoption
- Provides daily feeding, enrichment activities (i.e., walks twice a day), and ensures fresh, clean water is always available
- Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion in the performance of duties
- Performs other duties as required or assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least one (1) to three (3) years of experience in animal interaction or handling
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (UPON HIRE, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED):
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- North Carolina Certified Euthanasia Technician or training (within 6 months of hire)
- North Carolina Certified Rabies Vaccinator or training (within 6 months of hire)
- Fear Free Shelter Certification (within 6 months of hire)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, AND OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
- Standard vision requirements, with or without corrective lenses
- Occasionally lifts up to one hundred (100) pounds
- Occasionally spends time sitting, climbing or balancing, and tasting or smelling
- Frequently lifts up to fifty (50) pounds
- Frequently spends time standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands and fingers to handle, feel, type, or text, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and reaching with hands or arms
- Must be comfortable interacting with a wide range of animal specifies (including canines and felines)
- Must be able to express and exchange ideas through verbal communication
- Must be able to operate motor vehicles or equipment
- Must be able to engage in visual inspections involving small parts
- Must be able to observe general surroundings and activities
- Frequent exposure to disagreeable, hazardous elements
- Individuals are occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens
- Individuals are routinely exposes to wet, humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles
- Working in situations without following safety measures and not wearing appropriate personal protective equipment ("PPE") may result in situations that could result in accidents
- Subjected to mental effort and stressful situations during day-to-day operations
- Frequently subjected to loud noises
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Proficient in spoken and written English
- Ability to convey detailed instructions loudly, accurately, and/or quickly
- Ability to recognize information at normal spoken word volume levels
- Ability to receive detailed instructions or information through verbal communication
- Ability to use measuring devices
- Ability to engage in work requiring application of laws, ordinances, policies, or procedures
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrates organizational and time management skills
