Hannah KLS Reports, a division of Hannah News Service-Midwest, is providing a unique internship opportunity in the legislative arena. Students with interest in state or local government, public affairs, law, advocacy, or journalism are a perfect match for this opportunity, and regardless of major the position provides invaluable experience in the professional world. Interns are expected to be available a minimum of five hours per week, but may take on up to 35 hours per week if scheduling permits.
The Hannah internship experience:
Graduates of the Hannah KLS legislative internship leave with in-depth knowledge of Kentucky state government, the legislative process, public and private advocacy, and industry leading legislative information tools and standards. While following committees and sessions of the Kentucky General Assembly in real time, students will gain insider perspective on state legislation and the business of advocacy and journalism. Outstanding interns will also have opportunity for interviews/meetings with clients of Hannah KLS Reports, which includes lobbyists and advocates, law firms, statewide and local associations, non-profits, governmental entities, and more. The internship is an experience that will last a lifetime, and may well serve as a foot‐in‐the‐door to a career in government affairs.
Compensation:
$15.00/hour
Work created by interns will be available to Hannah’s entire client base. College credits are available for most students, with full intern evaluations from Hannah management upon request.

Key Responsibilities
- Legislative Process Mastery: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the legislative process in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
- Bill Tracking & Reporting: Cover House and Senate floor sessions to monitor bill progress, identify key developments, and alert clients of upcoming floor votes.
- Committee Analysis: Attend legislative committee meetings to identify and summarize key information for clients.
- Bill Review & Editing: Read and compare different versions of bills to draft and refine bill digests for accuracy and clarity.
- Transcript Editing: Edit and prepare legislative committee transcripts for distribution.
- Data Management & Research: Complete various tasks related to information gathering, research, and maintaining data integrity.
- Software Training & Usage: Receive training on and effectively use industry-leading tools and resources for legislative information management.
Day-to-Day Tasks
Interns will experience a dynamic work environment, with responsibilities such as:
- Monitoring live floor sessions and committee meetings for legislative developments.
- Collaborating with Hannah KLS staff to summarize and report legislative updates to clients.
- Preparing concise and accurate bill digests by comparing amendments and versions of proposed legislation.
- Utilizing advanced legislative tracking software to manage data and generate client-ready reports.
- Reviewing and editing official committee transcripts to ensure high editorial standards.
- Participating in professional development activities, including potential client meetings with lobbyists, law firms, and advocacy organizations.
Training & Support
Interns will receive comprehensive training on all tasks and tools required for their role. They will report directly to Hannah News Service management, ensuring ongoing mentorship and guidance throughout the internship.
