POSITION: Communications and Social Media Content Creator
STATUS: Intern
REPORTS TO: Chief of Staff
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the State Senator and Chief of Staff, the Communications and Social Media Content Creator will supplement efforts to increase engagement with community members and handle a diverse set of communication needs for the Senator’s office.
IN-DISTRICT EVENT JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Social Media Content Creation and Management:
- Draft engaging and informative social media posts highlighting community events, legislative initiatives, and constituent services.
- Edit and organize photos and videos for use across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn.
- Schedule and post content using approved tools and timelines.
- Monitor engagement metrics and community feedback to inform future posts.
- Maintain consistent visual branding and tone in coordination with Senate Communications staff.
- Support rapid response communications as needed for breaking news or district updates.
- Community Engagement: Represent the Senator at community events, forums, and online webinars. Collect newsletter sign-ups, distribute relevant literature and business cards, network with attendees, and submit brief event summary report.
- Event and Community Calendar Management: Conduct daily research to identify local events of community and legislative interest. Maintain an updated and accessible calendar for both constituent engagement and district office planning. Flag and recommend key events for the Senator’s potential attendance, coordinating with the Legislative Assistant and Senator for scheduling consideration.
- Advocacy and Outreach: Attend regular community meetings and mobilize around key advocacy efforts aligned with the Senator’s legislative priorities.
- Office and Constituent Photography: Capture photos of visiting constituents, partner organizations, and elected officials.
COMMUNICATION JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Draft, edit, and proofread press releases, public statements, letters, and social media content on local, state, and national issues.
- Create engaging social media posts, including photos, captions, and videos, in coordination with Senate Communications staff or the Chief of Staff.
- Capture and organize photos at events and office visits; upload content to AirTable and Dropbox with proper names and descriptions.
- Maintain an organized archive of all media materials, including photos, videos, press releases, and social media assets.
- Build and maintain relationships with local media outlets; assist in scheduling interviews and coordinating media requests.
- Draft or edit letters of support, opposition, or recommendation related to grants, legislation, or district issues.
- Conduct basic research and fact-checking to support accurate and informed communications.
OTHER OFFICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Office opening and closing
- Answer phones, direct messages/calls to appropriate staff.
- Add contacts/business cards into Air Table and other data entry
- Participate in weekly staff meetings
- Consciously help create a positive, friendly, supportive environment for all
- Business Casual Attire Require in Office
- Understand and follow confidentiality practices
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizing skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Ability to work on occasional evenings and weekends
- Ability to effectively engage people of diverse social, faith, economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds
- Preferred Bachelor's degree or 4 years experience in a related field
- Preferred Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures as well as operation and use of computer hardware, software and network systems including, MS Office suite, Word and Excel, Mailchimp, Zoom, Dropbox, and various online Apps
- Additional software skills preferred: Air Table, I-Constituent, CRM Gateway
- Must have a valid Driver’s License, access to reliable transportation, and willingness to travel within Illinois
WORK SCHEDULE
- As scheduled, Monday–Friday; 9am–5pm
- Flexible schedule
- Evenings and weekends as needed
PAY RATE: $15/hr
