Education Coordinator

Schedule: Part-Time 2-7pm

Salary: $35 Per Hour

FLSA Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Summary of Position

BCNY’s Education Program Coordinator will work to cultivate an intellectually rich learning environment and s/he will support the educational and academic success of all clubhouse members in a variety of ways. In addition, s/he will assume some responsibilities in program coordination that may include either homework help or tutoring, administrative work on tracking of student progress, and communication with families. The position will also be responsible for leading the coordination and development of the organization’s new focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) that includes overseeing a robotics team, specialized STEAM curriculum, and STEAM lab. The position requires a passion for children, teaching, and learning as well as flexibility, problem-solving, communication skills, cultural sensitivity and close attention to detail. The role is demanding, dynamic, and evolving depending on the needs of clubhouse members and program.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the day-to-day management of education programs (homework help or tutoring) and

help coordinate other programs (READ, Educational clubs) as needed. This includes planning, organizing, and ensuring successful implementation of education programs.

  • Builds strong relationships with members and families and work to ensure that individual needs (academic, emotional, social, physical) are met through the appropriate connection or coordination of programs and services.
  • Coordinates all aspects of BCNY’s STEAM programs and specialty STEAM curricula. The Education Program Coordinator will be responsible for attending relevant professional development workshops, training other STEAM teachers, collaborating on the creation of STEAM lab lesson plans, assisting in the formation of robotics teams, and recruiting outside of BCNY for new members interested in STEAM initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with the Program Development and Clubhouse team towards successful program execution, evaluation and operation, including gathering and tracking data.
  • Observes and tracks members’ academic progress and attendance through diagnostics and tutoring forms.
  • Communicates members' progress, attendance and upcoming events to members, parents or teachers in written progress reports, in person, by phone, or by email; schedule tutoring.
  • Engages boys directly through tutoring, small-group academic clubs, and other programs.
  • Reinforces positive student behavior and clubhouse rules and handles member behavior challenges as needed.
  • Regularly communicates with Education Director to share progress, concerns, and needs.
  • Supports selection, training, and management of part-time staff and volunteers including evaluating and assessing their needs for ongoing professional development; Delegates work appropriately; Ensures adequate coverage.
  • Observes staff members teaching/facilitation methods and examines program materials to evaluate effectiveness and determine areas where improvement is needed under direction of the Education Director.
  • Confers with members of educational committees and advisory groups to obtain knowledge of subject areas, and to relate curriculum materials to specific subjects, individual student needs, and occupational areas.
  • Supports recommendations, ordering, authorization for purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment designed to meet member needs.
  • Assumes responsibility for the supervision, care and maintenance of department equipment, resources and facilities.

 

 

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree strongly preferred in Elementary Education, Youth Development, Social Work, or a related field; Minimum of three-five years successfully working with youth in a not-for-profit or public education organization; Strong interest in STEAM subjects and projects preferred; Experience successfully supervising staff highly preferred; Experience working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth with a sound understanding of the social and cultural issues facing urban families.
