
Laboratory Director
The Laboratory Director manages a small, commercial, municipal laboratory whose staff currently consists of a laboratory technician. The director manages laboratory focused contracts and clients, works closely with municipalities and environmental groupsin the area, and maintains the laboratory state certification in microbiology analyses. The laboratory director is a Unit C member of the Health Department’s senior management team.

1. Supervision of all lab staff and duties.
2. Develop and regularly review policies, programs and standard operating procedures for the laboratory that will ensure accurate and objective results.
3. Assist in the development of the department budget and monitor and control authorized laboratory expenditures.
4. Provides formal supervision over all laboratory staff and is responsible for signing annual performance reviews
5. Maintains proficient laboratory service for the analysis of shellfish tanks, water distribution companies, private drinking wells, aquatic habitats, public drinking water systems, public and semi-public beaches, and environmental recreational waters.
6. Ensures quality assurance of all laboratory procedures while adhering to the standard methods for the examination of water/wastewater, EPA methods for chemical analyses and microbiology.
7. Interprets, evaluates and reports results of analyses to department heads, clients and regulatory authorities.
8. Consults and participates in problem solving as needed.
9. Participates in problem solving surveys and sampling regarding water complaints.
10. Trains qualified laboratory personnel.
11. Passes state mandated proficiency testing for relevant testing methods annually.
12. Maintains records and meets requirements for bi-annual state audit.
13. Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community and working relations.
14. Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/ Education and Experience
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or Chemistry.
• Three years of experience in an environmental analysis laboratory.
• Minimum of 4 college credits in Microbiology
• Ideally 24 college credits in Chemistry
• One year of experience in the microbiology methods utilized (membrane filtration methods for the analyses and detection of total coliforms, E. coli, and enterococci in recreational, environmental, and drinking water)
