Student Intern - Water Resources

POSITION SUMMARY

Student interns receive training and mentoring performing assignments that serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to Calleguas Municipal Water District’s (Calleguas’s) organizational structure. This position supports the Water Resources and External Affairs Departments, and tasks will primarily focus on efforts related to water use efficiency programs, communications and public outreach, data compilation and reporting, and legislative affairs. This position will also support other departments as needed. 
The student intern position based at the District’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California.  It is a part-time, temporary, at-will position limited to no greater than 8 hours per day and 24 hours per week Work schedule will be determined based upon department needs and the intern's school schedule. Work hours will typically be Monday thru Friday during regular business hours, although some weekend work may be required (e.g., for attendance at community events). The length of time for an internship is six months but may be extended by the General Manager up to an additional three months.
Where possible, the District will cooperate with the intern’s college or university if the school intends to award class credits for student participation in an internship program. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in the development and implementation of water use efficiency programs. 
  • Participate in District, local, and regional meetings in the water sector to expand knowledge of the industry.  
  • Participate on project teams as assigned. Examples of this may include enhancing communication efforts and materials for a variety of topics, including water use efficiency outreach, purveyor support, and legislative affairs.
  • Support staff with public outreach activities, including participating in community fairs and events. This may include weekends depending on the event. 
  • Prepare printed and digital public outreach materials, which may include collateral for social media, handouts, information for the District’s website, and other materials.
  • Engage with stakeholders and vendors to develop and procure promotional materials to support public outreach efforts.
  • Engage with water policy and legislative efforts that support the District’s Strategic Plan. 
  • Prepare and provide reports and presentations.
  • Learn and assist in inputting, maintaining, and verifying data.
  • Learn and assist in identifying opportunities for improving processes to optimize efficiency.
  • Perform research as assigned and apply academic theory, training, and education to real-world situations and environments.
  • Perform office duties and activities as required.
  • Perform other related Student Intern level job duties as required.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
The physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class.  


Physical

  • Sitting, standing, bending, reaching, talking, and hearing, in person, in meetings and by telephone.   
  • Manual dexterity and use of hands and fingers to handle and feel sufficient to operate a District vehicle, computers and standard office machines, such as calculators, telephones, copiers, and scanners.
  • Normal range of hearing.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May require lifting up to 25 pounds.

Mental

  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Interpretation of complex data, information, and documents.
  • Math and mathematical reasoning.
  • Perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions. 
  • Work under deadlines.
  • Interact with District executives and managers, governmental officials, employees, and the public.
  • Required to read and interpret complex data, information, and documents.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current enrollment in a community college, undergraduate, or graduate degree program and in good standing with the college or university, or 
  • Graduated within one year of date of application with a degree from a community college, undergraduate, or graduate degree program. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics are those generally encountered in an office environment. The employee works under typical office conditions, and the noise level is usually quiet.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess a California Motor Vehicle Operators License and proof of a good driving record, i.e., a driving record provided by the DMV showing less than 2 points assessed in the last 36 months and/or no serious or multiple traffic violations or accidents or failure to appear notices within the last 36 months.
  • Agree to authorize background reference checking with past employers and personal references.
  • Agree to submit to and pass the District’s pre-employment, post-offer medical examination performed by a physician chosen and paid for by the District.
