Student Intern - Regulatory Compliance
POSITION SUMMARY
Student interns receive training and mentoring performing assignments that serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to Calleguas Municipal Water District’s (Calleguas’s) organizational structure. This position supports the Regulatory Compliance Supervisor and Manager of Operations and Maintenance. The student intern will receive training, mentoring, and practical experience in water quality and regulatory compliance.
The District is looking for candidates with a strong knowledge and understanding of biological and chemical methods and principles. The intern will be responsible for working on new and on-going water quality projects. The candidate hired for this position will need strong critical thinking skills.
The internship will be based at the District’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California and will require approximately 10-20 hours of work per week, depending on workload. The work will involve the District’s full range of services, including potable water, recycled water, and brine/salinity management. The ideal candidate will have experience or knowledge in water quality.
The student intern position is a part-time, temporary, at-will position limited to no greater than 8 hours per day and 24 hours per week. Work schedule will be determined based upon department needs and the intern's school schedule. Work hours will be Monday thru Friday during regular business hours. The length of time for an internship is six months but may be extended by the General Manager up to an additional three months.
Where possible, the District will cooperate with the intern’s college or university if the school intends to award class credits for student participation in an internship program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Complete fieldwork, including, but not limited to, water quality sampling and analysis.
- Work in the District’s Laboratory.
- Write plans or Standard Operating Procedures.
- Perform research on laboratory methods and/or equipment.
- Participate in team projects.
- Assist in planning, conducting and compiling research, and information from various sources.
- Prepare and provide reports.
- Assist in collection and analysis of statistical data.
- Generate and maintain records and report findings.
- Assist in inputting, maintaining, and verifying data.
- Participate in the implementation of goals and objectives.
- Gain experience identifying opportunities for improving processes to optimize efficiency.
- Perform office duties and other related student intern activities as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Biology, Chemistry, or related science field, and must be in good standing with the college or university, or
- Graduated within one year of date of application with a degree from a community college, undergraduate, or graduate degree program.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess a California Motor Vehicle Operators License and proof of a good driving record, i.e., a driving record provided by the DMV showing less than 2 points assessed in the last 36 months and/or no serious or multiple traffic violations or accidents or failure to appear notices within the last 36 months.
- Agree to authorize background reference checking with past employers and personal references.
- Agree to submit to and pass the District’s pre-employment, post-offer medical examination performed by a physician chosen and paid-for by the District.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics are those generally encountered in an office setting, laboratory, and outdoors. The employee works in the industrial environment of the water treatment plant, wellfields, and other water facilities. The work involves the use of toxic and hazardous chemicals used in the water treatment process. The employee in this position is occasionally exposed to interior wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; vibration; and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
