About Huntin’ Fool

Huntin’ Fool is a member-focused hunting resource and magazine publisher dedicated to helping hunters plan, prepare, and experience world-class hunts. Our monthly magazine is the flagship of our brand — blending member stories, expert articles, state-by-state insights, gear reviews, and more. We take pride in producing a professional, authentic, and engaging publication that connects with our audience.

We’re looking for a Managing Editor to oversee the editorial process, from story selection through final edits, ensuring each issue meets the highest standards of accuracy, consistency, and style. The right candidate will be a deadline-driven editor and project manager who coordinates writers, photographers, Hunt Advisors, and designers from submission to press; communicates persistently yet collaboratively; thrives in a remote, tools-savvy workflow (Word, Trello, Acrobat, InDesign, and more); and possesses a genuine passion for the hunting/outdoor space.

Responsibilities

  • Content Editing & Proofing
    • Edit all magazine content: member stories, staff/guest articles, Soapbox, state sections, product features, and reviews.
    • Ensure clarity, flow, and adherence to style guidelines (Chicago Manual of Style).
    • Cross-reference state websites and databases to ensure accuracy across published content and changing state regulations.
    • Provide fact-checking and link validation across all content types.
    • Final sign-off for all outbound marketing content (flyers, catalogs, web pages, etc.)
  • Workflow Management
    • Manage content from submission through final layout and press.
    • Coordinate with writers, photographers, Hunt Advisors, and graphic designers to ensure timely delivery ahead of deadlines.
    • Build and distribute the monthly deadline calendar and serve as the final sign-off on all magazine-related projects.
  • Submissions & Photos
    • Proactively pursue and oversee submission intake via email, CRM, and web.
    • Verify exclusivity (no competing publications) and maintain DAM hygiene.
    • Notify featured members/authors, confirm shipping addresses, and create orders for story packages and contest prizes.
  • Final Edits & Layout Review
    • Review layouts for accuracy, style, captions, and design flow.
    • Collaborate with the design team (InDesign, Acrobat markup) on revisions.
    • Submit the finalized magazine to press while also uploading the digitized version to the Huntin’ Fool website (eMag).
  • Special Features & Projects
    • Support recurring features (Trophy Room, Dream Hunt Draws, What’s New, Product Reviews).
    • Help shape annual contests and story packages.
    • Provide proofreading and final edits for special projects (educational series, event promotionals, etc.)
  • Collaboration
    • Work closely with the COO, Marketing Team, and Hunt Advisors to align content with company vision.
    • Participate in weekly editorial meetings and coordinate priorities across teams.

Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of grammar, proofreading, and style (Chicago Manual of Style preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines for themselves and others.
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication—persistent yet collaborative.
  • Skill with both technical and creative writing.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Willing to work an occasional evening or weekend depending on press deadlines (esp. Jan–Mar).
  • Proficiency (or the ability to be proficient) with Microsoft Word, Teams, Adobe Acrobat, Trello, InDesign, HubSpot, Brandfolder, ChatGPT, and more.
  • Discipline when it comes to data and maintaining accurate records and naming conventions.

Preferred

  • 2+ years of project management experience (marketing, publishing, or related field preferred).
  • 2+ years of leadership experience (cross-functional teams preferred)
  • Workflow mastery with Kanban (or equivalent) editorial boards and multi-stakeholder approvals.
  • Experience with CRMs (HubSpot preferred).
  • Experience with DAMs (Brandfolder preferred).
  • Outdoor passion/experience (big game hunting preferred).
  • Located near Cedar City, Utah.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $50,000–$70,000 DOE.
  • Employer-sponsored 401k match.
  • Remote role with flexible PTO (with sensitivity to press deadlines).
  • Opportunities for growth in editorial leadership and publishing strategy.
  • Work with a passionate team in the hunting and outdoor industry.
