Position Overview
Camp Asbury is seeking enthusiastic and adaptable Experience Guides to join our summer staff team. Experience Guides play a key role in leading and supporting camp activities across a variety of program areas. Each Guide will bring their own passions and strengths, whether in arts, music, nature, media, or aquatics, but should also be prepared to step into other program areas as needed.
Our Program areas include:
- Waterfront and Aquatics (lifeguarding, swimming, canoeing, waterfront safety, fishing, slip n' slide, water games)
- Nature and Environmental Education (exploring trails, wetlands, wildlife, and natural habitats, playing nature games)
- Arts and Crafts (visual arts, clay/pottery, creative projects connected to camp themes)
- Music and Worship Music (campfire songs, leading music sessions, leading music in our outdoor music garden, dining hall songs, worship music leader, integrating music into camp life)
- Media and Storytelling (photography, video work, social media, newsletter development, and camp promotion)
Experience Guides will have access to a library of pre-planned activities and curriculum resources, making it easy to step in, lead engaging activities, and clean up afterward. At the same time, the Guide are encouraged to bring their own creativity, skills, and ideas to enrich the camp experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES
- Lead age-appropriate activities for campers in grades 1-12 across a variety of program areas.
- Adapt to the needs of the camp schedule, stepping into different program areas as required.
- Foster a safe, fun and welcoming environment for campers and staff.
- Model teamwork, creativity and respect for nature and community.
- Assist with set-up and clean-up of program spaces and materials.
- Collaborate with fellow staff to integrate weekly camp themes into activities.
- Participate in staff training and make a good-faith effort to complete certification courses in lifeguarding, archery instruction and ropes course facilitation (Employment is not contingent on passing these courses, but all staff are expected to try.) The cost of these courses is covered by Camp Asbury.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A passion for working with children and youth in an outdoor, community-centered setting.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Comfort leading groups of children in activities.
- Specific skills in one or more of the following areas are highly valued: aquatics, environmental education, visual arts, music, media/photography.
- Lifeguard certification (for those assigned to waterfront duties). Training provided for those who need it.
POSITION DETAILS
- Residential position. (Commuter position can be arranged) (room, board, and laundry included for residential staff)
- Paid position; may be structured as an internship with approval from you academic institution.
- Includes training, meals, housing (if residential), and the opportunity to live in a supportive community.
