Project Sponsor: Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI)

Location: Palouse Nature Center (Moscow, ID) and surrounding area

Timeline: 1700-hrs, Oct. 2025 to Aug. 31, 2026

 

Service Description/Position Summary

The Community Steward serves to build community involvement by planning and facilitating events and activities related to environmental learning and stewardship with supervision and direction from the Project Manager and collaboration with all PCEI staff. The member will coordinate volunteer involvement on ongoing projects at the Palouse Nature Center and at local restoration project sites. 

                                                            

Primary Member Activities:

  • Lead by example – Be a volunteer Leader, “doing” on the ground service projects with volunteers and collaborating with PCEI staff to facilitate PCEI goals
  • Organize and setup community events and restoration outreach
  • Coordinate volunteers (recruitment, coordination, leadership, and appreciation)
  • Collaborate on planning, facilitating, and leading of service-learning events and activities for community members/volunteers and school groups focused on conservation, stewardship, restoration, and local ecology
  • Lead youth and adults in outreach and educational activities
  • Create content for program outreach and educational purposes

 

Secondary Member Activities:

  • Conduct stewardship and restoration activities at PCEI’s Nature Center and restoration project sites, including weed management, trail maintenance, plant care at project sites and our on-site plant nursery, and installation of PALS/BDAs.
  • Build knowledge and skills related to local ecology, conservation, stewardship and restoration practices.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and supplies used in service-learning projects

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphic communication abilities
  • Experience organizing or coordinating groups or projects
  • Experience leading or teaching people of various ages
  • Demonstrated time management and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Experience doing physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Experience with hand tools and small machines (e.g., weed-whacker, tractor, ATV)
  • Knowledge of ecology, conservation, restoration, horticulture, land management, education, adult learning, curriculum and instruction, or related fields

                                                

Position Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.     
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.                                                  
  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent or commit to earning one prior to receiving award.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Must be able to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
  • Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check provided through PCEI.
  • Must complete and submit all necessary PCEI AmeriCorps paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
  • Must commit to and attend and complete all PCEI AmeriCorps training and service requirements including orientation, trainings, team meetings, and national service days.
  • Must wear AmeriCorps uniform and/or appropriate identifiers and required safety gear while performing service or attending official events.

Member Benefits Include:                                                                                                              

  • A taxable, monthly living allowance totaling $22,200 for an 11-month/1700-hour term.
  • Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members receive an education award in the amount of $7,395 that can be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational, or trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.                                           
  • Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable.)
