Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural and cultural resources. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, located on Roanoke Island and bordered by the Outer Banks, has been the scene of historical dramas for more than four centuries and has become a focal point of American history. The Carolina Algonquian people lived on Roanoke Island and the surrounding areas developing a unique culture in the Outer Banks. In the 1580s English colonists arrived and attempted to create the first English colony in North America. During the American Civil War, the US Army established a Freedmen's Colony on site. Today, the long-running Lost Colony play interprets the history of the English and Algonquian interactions on Roanoke Island.
The Interpretation and Visitor Services AmeriCorps position will serve as a member of the park's Interpretation and Visitor Services Team. The AmeriCorps member will assist park staff in providing a range of services designed to foster meaningful connections to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and its rich history. During the course of the internship, the member will serve alongside experienced National Park Service employees supporting every facet of park operations such as frontline visitor services, interpretive and educational programming, outreach events, special projects, and digital interpretive media content. The member will create programming centered on the Freedmen’s Colony of Roanoke Island and the Civil War Battle of Roanoke Island.
