Terms of Service:

 

  • Anticipated Start Date: 11/3/2025
  • Anticipated End Date: 3/20/2026 (20 weeks)
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 675 Hours

 

Purpose:

 

Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural and cultural resources. Wright Brothers National Memorial encompasses the spot where Wilbur and Orville Wright made history with their world-changing first flights on December 17, 1903, the historic sand dune where they did most of their gliding, and the location where they lived while experimenting in the Outer Banks. The site commemorates the first successful power-driven airplane flight - A Moment that Changed the World... the Place that Made it Possible.

 

The Interpretation and Visitor Services AmeriCorps position will serve as a member of the park's interpretation and Visitor Services team. The AmeriCorps member will assist park staff in providing a range of services designed to foster meaningful connections to Wright Brothers National Memorial and its rich history. During the course of the internship, the member will serve alongside experienced National Park Service employees supporting every facet of park operations such as frontline visitor services, interpretive and educational programming, outreach events, special projects, and digital interpretive media content.

Description of Duties:

 

As an AmeriCorps Member serving with Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC, your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Research and present at least two interpretive programs, including a 30-minute narrative program about the brothers and their flight and a 10-minute flyer demonstration showing how their airplane worked.
  • Assist Visitor Services by providing information on points of interest in the park at the visitor center and through roving interpretations.
  • Research, write, and publish content related to the story of the Wright Brothers and their first successful flight at Kitty Hawk. Content may include biography pages, articles, webpages, and social media content.
  • Research, write, edit, and publish digital interpretive content such as webpages, social media posts, and other content.
  • Develop and present engaging, audience-centered, formal, and informal interpretive programs.
  • Research and present at least one new interpretive program to public audiences.
  • Facilitate curriculum-based education programs on-site, in-classroom, and virtually.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned, based on the needs of the park and the interest and skills of the member.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Between the ages of 18 – 30, or up to age 35 with Veteran status.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  •  Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred.

Time Requirements:

 

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours a week, potentially including weekends, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • The member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
  • The member will serve fully in person on site.

 

Orientation and Training:

 

  • The member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • The member will receive interpretive training and guidance in the creation of programs, interpretive skills, and public speaking.
  • The member will receive guidance and training on writing for the public, editing skills, and social media techniques.
  • The member will receive training in the foundations of audience-centered interpretation, customer service, and area orientation.
  • The member will receive direct supervision, mentoring, and communication on-site in addition to safety and customer service training.
  • The member will receive job shadowing opportunities with other service groups in nearby parks.

Evaluation and Reporting:

 

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

 

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
