Job Summary:
The Detailer Trainee is an entry-level position providing hands-on training in structural steel detailing under the guidance of a Detailing Supervisor. This role focuses on learning to read and interpret design documents, understanding industry specifications and detailing software and standards. This position teaches how to turn engineering and architectural plans into drawings that guide the fabrication of structural steel. Performance in this role is evaluated by the Detailing Manager, with the goal of successfully completing the Detailer Training Program and transitioning into a Detailer role.
Essential Job Functions
- Learn to read and comprehend design documents and the specifications of governing bodies (AISC, AWS, ASTM, etc…).
- Learn various aspects of structural steel detailing process and successfully complete the Detailer Training program.
- Undertake extensive training on various computer software programs used by the Detailing Department.
- Develop the ability to work independently, cultivate confidence in your decision-making, and work with a sense of urgency.
- Develop a firm understanding of all aspects of the Detailing Standards Manual and other detailing department guidelines.
- Learn to recognize and communicate errors, discrepancies, and omissions of design information to the Detailing Supervisor.
- Learn to understand and implement project connection designs provided within the design documents or by the Engineering Department.

Qualifications and Requirements
Required: Associates degree. Experience with geometry mathematics, CAD and 3D modeling experience. General knowledge of computer software programs.
Preferred: Have a desire to learn structural steel fabrication and erection processes, posses formal drafting training or have had prior drafting experience and understand dimensioning concepts, symbols, layouts, sectioning, etc.
