AV Technician I

Position Overview:

The AV Technician I supports the daily audiovisual (AV) operations of the Aquarium, ensuring that all AV systems function smoothly for regular activities, evening programs, and special events. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about technology. The technician will work closely with team members across departments to set up, monitor, and troubleshoot AV equipment, contributing to a seamless visitor and staff experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain installed AV systems throughout the aquarium including digital signal processors, passive and powered speakers, microphones, projectors, video switchers, touch panels, flat screens and all other equipment as assigned.
  • Provide AV technical support for Seattle Aquarium departments, conference rooms, exhibits and events.
  • Install new AV components/systems for the Aquarium campus. Following design and build from the AV Engineer.
  • Participate in planning meetings for events and projects.
  • Update and maintain digital signage for schedules and exhibits.
  • Update and archive all AV related software and programing.
  • Write and keep up to date all AV documentation, processes, and procedures.
  • Self-assign audio visual work orders. Assist in the day-to-day workload of the ticketing system.
  • Shoot and edit videos/photos/audio recordings to be published internally and over the web. Media work will often consist of shooting training videos, new staff portrait photography, and editing other departments assets when requested.
  • Event staffing (20%). Events can occur weekdays and weekends. Most of the events will be evenings or early mornings. 
  • Hardware installations and systems testing during evenings and early mornings.

Required Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements:

  • We will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements. One or more years prior AV work experience from events or in a corporate environment, or education degree/certificate related to an AV field of work.
  • Comfortable with, and capable of, communicating in a variety of methods (written, verbal, non-verbal) within all levels of an organization. English verbal and written proficiency are required for this job, but multilingualism is a cultural and personal skill we deeply value. 
  • Working knowledge of computers. Software experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite preferred. 
  • Able to work alone or as a team member.
  • Ability to obtain Overton lift operator certification for type 2-3 (drivable lifts)
  • Ability to obtain QSYS Level 1 & Audinate Dante Level 1 certifications within the first year of employment. Time will be given for employees to take the free training and certification.  
  • Ability to read and communicate signal flow. Experience following signal path within a digital signal processor a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Duties of this job include employee regularly required to sit and stand for variable and extended periods of time.
  • Working independently with the ability to complete tasks and projects with minimal or no direct supervision
  • Employee will be asked to travel across the Aquarium campus regularly, often while handling heavy equipment.
  • This position requires frequent use of ladders and mechanical lifts with the ability to perform dexterous tasks such as running cables, and using power tools, while at heights exceeding 7 feet.
  • Employee may be asked to lift up to 35 pounds and may be required to “team lift” heavier weights.
  • The vision requirements include ability to adjust focus, peripheral vision, and close vision for work with visual systems that require manual focusing.
  • At times exposure to outside weather conditions when working and troubleshooting audiovisual equipment.
  • Noise from audiovisual equipment, machinery, and visitors when Aquarium is busy.
  • Often working in enclosed and small spaces when installing new systems. 
  • Will be required to work evening shift for events and other business needs. On-site evening work varies, approximately 1-4 on-site evening shifts per month.
  • Be able and willing to safely use of scissor lift and boom lift for work in outdoor and indoor environments.
  • Able to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays when required. schedules shift varies often based on number of monthly events and request for evening/weekend work from other departments.
  • To be eligible for hybrid work, you must have a stable internet connection at your residence.
