Heading Home's mission is to end homelessness in Greater Boston by providing a supported pathway to self-sufficiency that begins with a home, together with critical services such as life skills, financial literacy, and job training.
Founded in 1974, Heading Home is a leading provider of housing and support services for extremely low-income individuals and families currently or formerly experiencing homelessness in Greater Boston. For nearly 50 years, we have successfully helped thousands of people end their homelessness.
As an agency, our services are diverse; we provide emergency, transitional, and permanent housing, and support services, to extremely low-income individuals and families currently or formerly experiencing homelessness.
We are proud to share that for 17 years running, Heading Home's permanent housing retention rates have been 90%+. Last year, 97% of Heading Home clients remained housed after one year.
Job Title: Social Media Intern
Reports To: Chief Development Officer
Location: Boston, MA
Commitment: 10-15 hours/week
Overview
The Social Media Intern will support our communications and development team in amplifying our mission, telling client success stories (with dignity and confidentiality), and engaging supporters through creative and consistent content. This is an excellent opportunity for a student or interested in nonprofit communications, social impact, and digital storytelling.
Responsibilities
- Assist in creating, scheduling, and posting content across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, TikTok).
- Draft captions, graphics, and short-form video content aligned with our mission and brand.
- Research and suggest new strategies for audience engagement and growth.
- Monitor social channels for engagement and respond to comments/messages as appropriate, in consultation with Chief Development Officer
- Help maintain a content calendar tied to organizational initiatives and events.
- Track and report on social media analytics (reach, engagement, follower growth).
- Stay updated on social media trends, especially in the nonprofit and advocacy space.
Qualifications
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and basic content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Express, or similar).
- Interest in nonprofit work, social justice, or housing/homelessness issues.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
- Attention to detail and sensitivity in representing vulnerable populations with respect and dignity.
- Photography and video editing skills are a plus.
